Hawai'i Edges CSUN 3-2 In Softball Opener
5/4/2018 11:25:00 PM | Softball
HONOLULU—A seventh inning CSUN rally just fell short as Hawai'i defeated the Matadors 3-2 to open a Big West Conference softball series Friday night.
Â
The Rainbow Wahine loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the first against CSUN starter Cheyenne Noli. Noli hit Danielle Garcielita to allow Hawai'i to take a 1-0 lead. Jillian James relieved Noli and struck out Alyssa Sojka to put down the UH threat.
Â
Journey Rojas singled to lead off the CSUN second. She would be stranded at second after advancing on a Dana Thomsen wild pitch during Haileigh Gonzalez's at-bat. Julianna Martinez, the Matadors' No. 9 hitter, worked a four-pitch walk with one out in the top of the third. Mackenzie Babbitt attempted to sacrifice Martinez up a base. The ball was fielded by Sojka, the Rainbow Wahine's second baseman. Her throw went wide, allowing Martinez to reach third. Jessica Alexander's sacrifice fly plated Martinez to tie the game at one.
Â
Rojas began the CSUN fourth with a single up the middle. She successfully advanced a base on a Megan Stevens sacrifice bunt. Gonzalez struck out for the second out. Kira Cauley singled and moved to second on the throw, but the ball wasn't deep enough for Rojas to score. Raquel Jaime popped out to second to end the inning.
Â
Britnee Rossi doubled to begin the Hawai'i fourth. James struck out the next two Rainbow Wahine. Chardonn Pantastico was hit by a pitch with the count standing a 1-1. Garcielita grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice to wrap up the inning. Â
Â
Rachael Turner singled with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Heather Cameron ran for Turner with Callee Heen coming to the plate. Cameron moved to second on a James wild pitch. Heen walked. Cheeks Ramos flew out to center which allowed Cameron to advance to third. A second pinch-runner, Courtney Hiruko, entered for Heen. A CSUN error on an UH double steal attempt allowed Cameron to score an unearned run and give Hawai'i a 2-1 lead.
Â
The Rainbow Wahine added an insurance run in the sixth when Sojka homered to lead off the inning. Gonzalez reached on an error to begin the CSUN seventh. Cauley's sac bunt moved her to second. Pinch-hitter Kenedee Jamerson popped out before Martinez would single to right center to drive in Gonzalez to make it 3-2. Babbitt singled up the middle which allowed Martinez to take third. Alexander would ground out to short to end the game.
"We started off slow today, but were able to battle back," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "We battled to the end and started to make adjustments at the end. I'd like to see us be more aggressive and confident on every pitch from the start tomorrow."
Â
Thomsen would toss a complete game five-hitter with Rojas going 2-for-3. The Matadors' pitchers would only allow six hits.
Â
The Matadors (20-34, 5-11 Big West) and Hawai'i (22-23, 6-10 Big West) conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. PDT/2 p.m. HST.
