CSUN Comes Back to Top Sacramento State in Five Sets
8/24/2018 10:16:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Aeryn Owens, Lexi McLeod and Hannah Merjil each recorded double-doubles as the CSUN Matadors picked up their first win of the season, topping Sacramento State in five sets (25-18, 18-25, 23-25, 25-14, 16-14) Friday night at Colberg Court at the Nest.
CSUNÂ (1-1) won the first set 25-18 before dropping the next two sets. The Matadors then dominated the fourth set before pulling out a tight 16-14 decision in the fifth.
"That was a quality win tonight, a character win," said CSUN Head Coach Jeff Stork. "We did a good job in set one and they made a few adjustments over the next two sets that we had some trouble with. But that's all part of the growing pains with a young team. Overall I'm pleased with the win but we still have a lot of work to do."
Owens put down a match-high 18 kills, hitting .361 on 36 swings. The senior from Rancho Cucamonga also added 16 digs and two aces for her 19th career double-double. McLeod notched her first collegiate double-double with 15 kills and 13 digs while the freshman also added her first ace as a Matador.
Merjil, the redshirt freshman setter, had a solid all-around match with 26 assists, 12 digs and four aces to also post her first double-double. Freshman Nicole Nevarez was the third Matador hitter to reach double figures by chipping in 12 kills (.267) while senior libero Kristey Markle tied for match-high honors with 21 digs.
CSUNÂ hit .216 and .263 to win the first and fourth sets but struggled hitting a combined .153 in sets two and three, both Hornet wins.
In the decisive fifth set, the Matadors overcame an early 5-2 deficit before Nevarez snapped the Hornet run with a kill. A pair of CSUN hitting errors gave Sac State another three-point cushion as the teams changed sides at 8-5.
The Matadors then took advantage of a series of Hornet miscues to take a 9-8 lead before the hosts pulled even again at 10-10. Kills from Owens and Morgan Salone forced a Sac State timeout at 12-10. Owens and Salone then teamed up to stuff a Hornet attack giving the Matadors a 13-10 lead.
The Hornets then engineered a 4-0 run to set up match point at 14-13. But Owens' kill saved one match point and a Hornet setting error set CSUN up with match point at 15-14 and Merjil immediately found the senior again and Owens ended the match with her 18th and final kill.
Macey Hayden led the Hornets (1-1) with 16 kills (.213) while Sarah Davis added 14.
CSUN completes the Hornet Invitational Saturday morning as the Matadors take on Utah State at 11 a.m.
