Portland Holds off CSUN in Four Sets
9/15/2018 11:28:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
BOISE, Idaho - The CSUN Women's Volleyball team completed non-conference play Saturday as the Matadors fell in four sets (25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18) to Portland in the finale of the Boise State Classic at Bronco Gym.
With the loss, CSUN completes its non-conference schedule with a 4-8 record while the Pilots, coached by former Matador men's volleyball player Jeff Baxter, remain undefeated at 12-0.
"Give credit to Portland, they have a style of play that we just couldn't stop today," said CSUN Head Coach Jeff Stork. "Despite the loss, this was our best match of the weekend in terms of how we played. We stayed fairly focused most of the way, but at the end of the day we need to stay in system more and get more production out of our point scorers."
Senior Aeryn Owens, who was named to the All-Tournament team, led the Matadors with 17 kills, hitting .278 on 36 attacks. Owens also added eight digs, two aces and one solo block. Freshman Lexi McLeod added 11 kills and eight digs while redshirt junior Brianna Johnson chipped in eight kills (.316) and three blocks.
As a team, CSUN hit .203 (53-25-138) as Erin Indermill and Hannah Merjil combined for 43 assists. Indermill also added a pair of kills and five digs while Merjil posted six digs in the loss.
The Matadors were out-blocked by Portland, 11.0 to 4.0 and the Pilots also had 54 team digs to 48 for CSUN.
"We still have a long ways to go, we're definitely not as good as we're capable of being," added Stork. "We need to continue to improve both individually and collectively as we head into the Big West season."
Portland, which hit .281 (48-14-121), was led by Shayla Hoeft who had 14 kills (.478).Â
The Matadors return home next week to host Cal State Fullerton in their 2018 Big West opener Tuesday at 7 p.m.
