Trejo Records A Hat Trick As CSUN Defeats UVU 6-1
9/2/2018 4:06:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Daniel Trejo recorded a hat trick, the first for the CSUN men's soccer program in a regular season match in just under three years Sunday afternoon to lead the Matadors past Utah Valley 6-1.
Â
Wolfgan Prentice earned CSUN the lead in the 21st minute when he headed in a Brendan Hildreth cross. Utah Valley's Zach Maas tied the match in the 50th minute as he took advantage of a CSUN misplay in front of the Matadors' goal.
Â
Trejo put CSUN into the lead for good at the 51:53 mark with his first goal which came off a pair of passes from Ehi Isibor and Wolfgang Prentice. 10:53 later, Trejo took advantage of a Samuel Dadzie ball that went off the head of a UVU defender in front to make the game 3-1. 46 seconds later, at 63:28, Trejo capped off the hat trick when Michael Flores sent a ball long and through the middle of the Wolverines' defense for a 4-1 score.
Â
The last CSUN hat trick occurred on Sept. 18, 2015 when Carlos Gonzalez scored three times against Saint Mary's in the Matadors 4-1 victory over the Gaels. Trejo's hat trick is the 19th by a CSUN player since the Matadors moved to the Division I level in 1990. Trejo also tallied a hat trick during CSUN's exhibition victory over Cal State San Bernardino Aug. 15.
Â
Khalid Hunter would post his team leading fourth goal in the 73rd minute before Johnny Rodriguez capped off the scoring on the day with 3:41 to play in the match. Led by Isibor who had a career best two, six different CSUN players would earn an assist on the day.
Â
"I was very proud of our finishing and very proud of our runs to goal," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "We played a very good team and things went our way. What was special about Danny's hat trick that it was done in what, a 15-minute span? He is an explosive player who has been chomping at the bit to score for us and I am very happy he scored for us."
Â
The six CSUN goals (which were scored only 13 attempts, eight of which were on goal) are the most for the Matadors since Aug. 31, 2007 when the Matadors handed Detroit Mercy a 6-1 defeat at Matador Soccer Field. The eight CSUN assists that the Matadors recorded are the most in a match since Sept. 7, 2003 when CSUN had eight against IUPUI. The six goals which Utah Valley allowed in their first loss of 2018 (3-1) are the most in the program's history.
Â
CSUN (3-1) heads to Seattle for a Friday match against No. 3 Washington (2-1) that will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be streamed on Pac-12.com.
