No. 9/23 Washington Defeats No. 25 CSUN 2-1

SEATTLE—In a match between a pair of nationally ranked opponents, No. 9/23 Washington defeated No. 25 CSUN 2-1 in men's soccer action Friday night.

The Huskies threatened early as Washington sent Blake Bodily on a long run in the fourth minute. His attempt from close range was turned away by Henrik Regitnig. Johnny Rodriguez appeared to put CSUN up 1-0 in the seventh minute, but his goal was wiped off the boards due to the Matadors being called for offsides.

Kyle Coffie put the Huskies into the lead at the 18:41 mark when he headed in a Joey Parish cross. Washington continued to put the pressure on with a pair of shots in the 25th minute that were blocked by the CSUN defense. As a result, the Huskies were awarded back-to-back corner kicks that were defended successfully by the Matadors.

Washington increased the lead to 2-0 in the 33rd when Joey Parish scored in front of the CSUN net. Corban Anderson was credited with the assist on the play. The Huskies would limit the Matadors to one shot in the first half as Washington led by two at halftime. Â

On the second CSUN shot of the match, Rodriguez cut the Washington lead in half at 60:10 when he headed in a Prentice cross. CSUN earned a corner two minutes later where Nicolas Grinde's attempt was wide. The Matadors were awarded a corner in the 70th minute. Giovanni Aguilar's ball was on line to Samuel Dadize. Dadzie's header just went wide.

Back-to-back CSUN corners saw the Matadors come away with one shot on goal that was saved by Washington keeper Scott Menzies. On the ensuing Huskies' possession, Washington would get a corner. The Huskies' would posted two shots, the first was blocked. The second by Daniel Ribas was saved by Regitnig. A Christian Wimmer attempt in the 80th minute went wide.

Washington would gain back-to-back corners in the 82nd minute. The CSUN defense was forced to scramble on the second with Regitnig coming out of the box. The Matadors maintained composure with Regitnig grabbing the ball out of the air to quiet the threat. Bodliy was wide with a shot in the 83rd. CSUN would get a corner in the 86th minute, but a pass into the box would result in the ball going off a Matador, turning the possession over to Washington. CSUN regained possession that resulted in a corner. The ball was sent towards the Huskies' goal but would bounce out in favor of Washington. The final CSUN shot of the game occurred with 35 seconds to play as Rodriguez's attempt was wide left. Bodily would take a shot as time expired for Regitnig's fifth and final save of the match.
"We lost the game in the first half," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "We did not perform to our team's expectation. To beat Washington at Washington, our team had to perform at a higher level."

Friday night marked the first time since Nov. 17, 2013 that CSUN and its opponent were both ranked. On that night, CSUN (No. 25) dropped a 1-0 decision to UC Irvine. (No. 18).

The Matadors (3-2) travel across town to face Seattle U Sunday afternoon. Seattle U defeated No. 14 Akron 2-1 Friday night to improve to 3-1 on the year. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. and will be streamed on the WAC Digital Network.
