Matadors Draw Against Sacramento State After Late Equalizer
10/8/2025 11:15:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif -- The CSUN men's soccer team (6-2-4, 1-1-1 Big West) drew against Sacramento State, 2-2 Wednesday night at Matador Soccer Field. The Hornets rallied with two second-half goals after the Matadors opened the game with a two goal first half lead. Zion Wagoner and Enrique Pineda both found the back of the net for CSUN.Â
Â
Wagoner opened the scoring in the sixth minute, burying a penalty kick for his first goal of the season after a handball in the box. The go-ahead goal by the senior from Denver, Colorado was his first since Oct.12, 2024 at CSU Bakersfield.Â
Â
CSUN controlled much of the opening half, outshooting the Hornets 8-2 and keeping pressure on goalkeeper Lucas Bost. Justin Sosa forced a save in the 11th minute, and Zack Harris tested Bost again eight minutes later with a shot from distance that was tipped away.
Â
The Matadors doubled their lead just before halftime when Ian Boras sent a cross from the left side that found Enrique Pineda, who rose above the defense and headed the ball into an open net in the 41st minute.
Â
In the second half, the Hornets responded by taking control of much of the possession. Sacramento State generated more chances in the final 45 minutes than the previous half.Â
Â
CSUN goalkeeper Dorian Drucks made back-to-back stops in the 49th and 50th minutes, including a sharp dive to deny a shot from Hiroshi Yang. The Hornets finally broke through in the 66th minute when Yang's cross slipped through the box and found Eli Reyneveld, who finished from the top of the box to cut the deficit in half.
Â
Despite being outshot 15–13 in the second half, the Matadors nearly put the game away. Pineda's low shot in the 67th minute forced a diving save from Hornet goalkeeper Andres Rosales and Sebastian Fuentes had a close-range attempt stopped in the 76th minute.
Â
Sacramento State equalized in the 87th minute after a red card moments earlier left the visitors down a man. Angad Singh sent a lofted ball to Nick Strangio, whose header at the far post found the back of the net to make it 2–2 game.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH TERRY DAVILA
"We kept ourselves in the game for the full 90 minutes. All moments of the game are important. Last few minutes of the game are all hands on deck trying to clear the ball out of the box. And we didn't do that tonight. They were able to get a goal late, kudos to them. You've got to win set pieces. They scored on a mix-up play. I thought Kike [Enrique Pineda] did a good job tonight, we gotta find more playing time for him."
