CSUN Outlasts Cal Poly in OT to Start Big West 2-0
1/12/2019 10:12:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (8-10) edged Cal Poly (4-11, 0-2 BWC) in overtime on Saturday evening at Mott Athletics Center to start 2-0 in Big West Conference play. Four Matadors scored in double figures led by sophomore Terrell Gomez with 23 points. Freshman Lamine Diane scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while Rodney Henderson Jr. and Michael Ou had 12 points apiece.
The Matadors led by 20 points in the first half only to see Cal Poly roar back and take a 10-point lead in the second half. In the end, the Matadors would outlast the Mustangs due in large part to a clutch 3-pointer and two free throws from freshman Darius Brown II in the final minute. Brown tallied a career-high 11 assists with seven points.
CSUN shot 48.3 percent for the night while Cal Poly finished with a 34.2 shooting percentage. From 3-point range, the Matadors went 8-for-20 (40.0 percent) compared to the Mustangs who went 13-for-38 (34.2 percent). CSUN outscored Cal Poly 32-18 in the paint.
ACCORDING TO MARK GOTTFRIED
"I'm proud of our guys. It's kind of a weird game," said head coach Mark Gottfried. "We had a big lead early. I thought we played really well for the first about seven, eight minutes. To start the second half, they had a little more zip than we did. But what I liked was when they took the lead and we got down, our guys didn't fold. We just hung in there, showed great character, made plays on both ends of the floor and stepped up and made big shots. A great team win and a lot of guys did a lot of good things tonight."
FIRST HALF
The Matadors came out fast at the outset of the game, scoring the first seven points. All five Matador starters scored in the first four minutes of the game as a 9-0 run quickly built a 16-3 lead. Diane later scored on a driving layup to push the Matador lead to 29-9 at the 10:37 mark. During a 20-6 run, the Matadors made nine consecutive shots over a five-minute stretch.
Â
The Mustangs answered back with a 14-4 spurt that cut the deficit to 10 points. However, the Matadors never led by less than double digits for the rest of the half. Gomez went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the period and his trey at the 3:47 mark pushed the lead to 38-24. In the half, Gomez had 13 points while Diane added 12. The Mustangs would cut the lead to 11 (38-27) at the break on a late 3-pointer from Kuba Niziol.

SECOND HALF
The script would flip in the second half as the Mustangs went on a 11-1 run out of the gate to cut the Matador lead to 39-38. After a Ou layup, the Matadors would go through a dry spell that lasted 4:30 as the Mustangs scored 13-straight points to lead 51-41. Diane finally ended the run with a jumper and he would score two more shots to bring CSUN within 51-49 at the 10:26 mark.
The Matadors played catch up for most of the half until finally evening the game at 59-59 on a 3-pointer from Henderson Jr. Ou later gave the Matadors their first lead since the early moments of the half on a layup with 2:01 to go. CSUN led by two with less than a minute to play but Hank Hollingsworth tied the game on a putback to held send the game to overtime.
OVERTIME
Donovan Fields, who scored a game-high 30 points, hit three-straight 3-pointers to give Cal Poly a 71-67 lead with 2:59 on the clock. The Matadors would be fouled on their next two possessions leading to three-straight free throws from Henderson Jr. and two from Gomez that put CSUN in front by one. CSUN led 73-71 with less than a minute to go before Gomez found Brown for an open 3-pointer. Fields answered with a trey of his own but Brown knocked down two free throws to put the Matadors in front 78-74. The CSUN defense held firm in the final seconds to pull out the win.
