Late CSUN Rally Falls Short Against Hawai'i
1/17/2019 9:45:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (8-11, 2-1 BWC) rallied late against Hawai'i (11-5, 2-0 BWC) but fell short in an 84-79 loss on Thursday evening at The Matadome. Playing the full 40 minutes, sophomore Terrell Gomez hit a career-high seven 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 30 points while freshman Lamine Diane recorded his 11th double-double with 28 points and 16 rebounds. Junior Rodney Henderson added 11 points and four rebounds.
The Matadors trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half before fighting back to take a lead in the second half. However, the Rainbow Warriors took control and held off an offensive outburst from Gomez in the final minute to hand the Matadors their first Big West defeat.
The Rainbow Warriors shot 48.3 percent from the field compared to the Matadors who finished 46.0 percent from the floor. CSUN went 11-of-25 from 3-point land (44.0 percent) and 10-of-11 (90.9 percent) at the foul line while Hawai'i shot 7-of-21 from the 3-point line (33.3 percent) and 21-of-31 at the charity stripe (67.7 percent). Hawai'i held a narrow 35-34 lead in the rebounding department and outscored the Matadors 40-30 in points in the paint.
ACCORDING TO COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"I thought we really had a slow start. Once we got out of that, our guys really played hard and competed right to the end. Terrell made a lot of big shots. Lamine was terrific. But [Hawai'i] had a little too much. They can shoot the ball really well, and got loose on a couple threes. We've got to learn to start a little better. I think we came out and didn't have the energy early. Midway through the first half, we kind of got going. In the second half, we played pretty well, but it seemed like we were playing uphill the whole night."
FIRST HALF
The Rainbow Warriors came out hot, scoring the game's first seven points before later building a 13-4 lead at the 15:08 mark. CSUN would rally back behind strong shooting from beyond the arc as four-straight 3-pointers suddenly cut the lead to 17-16. A steal from Darius Brown II and a layup from Cameron Gottfried on the other end capped a 14-4 run to put the Matadors ahead 18-17 near the midway mark of the period.
Hawai'i though regained control and went on a 13-1 run to stake to its biggest lead (42-27) following a 3-pointer from Jack Purchase. Eddie Stansberry hit four 3-pointers in the half and scored 16 points to lead the visitors. The Matadors went into the break with a bit of momentum as a 10-2 run trimmed the deficit to 44-37 after 20 minutes. Gomez scored 11 points in the period on 3-of-6 shooting.
SECOND HALF
After intermission, the Matadors continued to trim away at the lead in the early minutes. Diane scored six-straight points before Gomez squared the game at 49-49 on a trey with 16:46 on the clock. On the next CSUN possession, Henderson grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a putback layup to give the Matadors a 51-49 lead. Hawai'i though would right the ship and score the next seven points, capitalizing on a near four-minute Matador scoring drought, to take a 56-51 advantage.
The Rainbow Warriors continued to lead down the stretch and eventually built a 73-63 lead on a Drew Buggs basket at the 4:10 mark. With every reason to hang their heads, the Matadors kept on battling in the final minutes. Gomez hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to single digits before Jared Pearre threw down a dunk to trim the lead to six. Diane converted on a traditional 3-point play to bring CSUN with 75-71 but Hawai'i scored the next three points to lead 78-71 with 46 seconds left.
Gomez would go to work in the final minute, scoring on a layup and then a 3-pointer following a Pearre steal. Moments later, after two Hawai'i free throws, Gomez drained an NBA-range 3-pointer to bring CSUN within 80-79. Following a CSUN foul, Samuta Avea made two free throws on the other end, giving the Rainbow Warriors an 82-79 lead with five seconds to go. On the ensuing possession though Stansberry intercepted a Diane pass to secure the win for Hawai'i.
GAME NOTES
Freshman Ron Artest III made his Matador debut in the game, playing eight minutes and picking up three rebounds before fouling out. Gottfried scored eight points and collected four rebounds off the bench while Brown dished out seven assists for CSUN.
For Hawai'i, Stansberry scored a team-best 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting and Zigmars Raimo added 21 points. The Rainbow Warriors have now won five-straight games at The Matadome.
