Matadors Take Care of Westmont, 7-0
1/26/2019 2:25:00 PM | Women's Tennis
NORTHRIDGE, Calif -- On a windy day in Northridge, the 2019 CSUN women's tennis team kicked off the heart of dual season with a resounding sweep victory, 7-0, over Westmont Saturday at the Matador Tennis Complex.
FINAL SCORE
Westmont vs CSUN
Jan 26, 2019 at Northridge, CA (Matador Tennis Complex)
CSUN 7, Westmont 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
"We managed the wind as well as we could, and we stayed mentally strong on a fairly unconventional day. We are really impressed with Monika coming back from an injury to play well against their No. 1 player, it shows a lot of guts. We didn't let the wind work against us. We played through it and we were mentally tough. All the important things are there, the team works really hard, they support each other and there is a lot of talent here in order for us to be very successful. We are very capable of playing at a very high level, and we just have to believe in ourselves."
UP NEXT:
CSUN continues dual season with a scrimmage at home versus Azusa Pacific on Feb.1. It doesn't count for the record books again until the Matadors take on San Jose State Feb 3.
FINAL SCORE
Westmont vs CSUN
Jan 26, 2019 at Northridge, CA (Matador Tennis Complex)
CSUN 7, Westmont 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- CSUN kicked off the scoring by taking the doubles point in convincing fashion over the Warriors when Skyla Alcon and Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso defeated Cade Pierson and Taylor Cheung-Damonte (6-1) in No. 2 doubles.
- The Matadors would clinch the doubles point when Monika Van de Vondel and Jolene Coetzee conquered Isabel Lee and Sidney Lowry (6-2) in No.1 doubles.
- In singles competition, the Matadors were in control early and never looked back. Sibel Demirbaga opened up the scoring by blanking Rachal Jackson (6-0, 6-0).
- CSUN would continue its good play when Skyla Alcon was lights out against Taylor Cheung-Damonte (6-0, 6-0). The Warriors did not win a game point in the first two singles matches.
- Fraile Toboso continued her great start to the season by taking care of Emily Peterson (6-2, 6-1) en route to giving CSUN a 4-0 lead.
- Emma Roenholt did her job by defeating Lowry (6-1, 6-2).
- Van de Vondel outlasted Pierson, arguably Westmont's best player (6-1, 6-3) to put CSUN ahead 6-0.
- Coetzee would finish the job by defeating Lee 6-2, 6-3.
- Van de Vondel bounced back after injuring herself during last week's Long Beach State Winter Invitational. Her status was in question this week, but she persisted and led the Matadors to a doubles point and a crucial singles victory.
- Alcon and Fraile Toboso are both off to great starts in 2019. They are each 3-0 in singles play on the year with the only loss coming in a doubles match against Hawai'i on January 13.
- The Warriors are part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), primarily competing in the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC).
- Finishing second place in the conference last season, Westmont finished with a 10-12 record and went 4-2 in the GSAC – vastly improving upon a 3-16 record from the 2017 season.
- This was their 2019 season opener.
