NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball completed another successful Alumni Weekend this past Monday. Over a two-day span, the team welcomed back over 40 alumni back to campus for the annual Alumni Game and the Matadors hosted the sixth annual Bob Hiegert Golf Classic at Woodland Hills Country Club with over 100 guests in attendance.
Â
"The weekend reminds our coaching staff each year of the lasting relationships built in and around baseball," said head coach Greg Moore. "CSUN's history is rich. This weekend we celebrated 35 years since the '84 National Championship. Now we look forward to honoring the 50 year anniversary with the 1970 group who won our first national championship."Â
Â
The Alumni Weekend kicked off last Sunday with the Alumni Game at Matador Field. A total of 44 alumni returned back to CSUN including recent alums Albee Weiss, Justin Toerner, Nolan Bumstead and Andrew Weston. Members of the 1970 and 1984 National Championship teams were in attendance along with players from the 1996 WAC Championship and 2002 Big West Championship teams.
Â
Former Major Leaguer Bill Murphy started the game for the alumni on the hill and tossed a shutout first inning. The 2019 Matadors though found their stroke in the second inning, plating six runs. Sophomore Brandon Bohning delivered the big blow in the inning with a two-run double while juniors Sean Skelly and Robert Bullard had RBI hits. The Matadors added single tallies in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings en route to a 9-1 win.
Â
Sophomore Victor Cerny provided the most noise at the plate with a solo home run that hit the tree in left-center field in the seventh. On the mound, Wesley Moore hurled three shutout innings to start the game while Cruz Daddario allowed a run in three innings of his own. Junior Jackson Cunningham, sophomore Blake Schriever and freshman Blaine Traxel each blanked the alumni with shutouts frames out of the bullpen.
Â
On Monday, the festivities moved to the Woodland Hills Country Club where 95 guests took part in the annual Bob Hiegert Golf Classic. Former Matadors Josh Goldberg (1999-00), Tim Bell (1998-99), Carey Novits (1997-98) and Jim Debiase (1998-99) capped off the day with a victory in the tournament.
Â
After an afternoon of competition, the team hosted its annual alumni dinner with 150 guests in attendance. Among the speakers at the event were two-time National Championship coach and Matador Hall of Famer Bob Hiegert, 1970 National Champion Irv Zakheim and CSUN Baseball broadcaster Ross Porter.
Â
The Matadors open up the 2019 season at home against Kansas State. The four-game series will start on February 15 at Matador Field with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
