NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (9-4-3, 3-1 Big West) posted its second-straight shutout win, topping UC Santa Barbara 1-0 on Thursday evening at Matador Soccer Field. Junior Avery DeWitt scored what would be the game-winner in the 34th minute off a free kick. Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Delgado helped guide the Matadors to their eighth shutout of the season.
CSUN outshot the Gauchos 12-4 in the match including 4-1 in shots on goal. Corner kicks also went the Matadors way at 9-3. A total of 23 fouls were called in the match with CSUN whistled for 16 of them. A pair of Gauchos received yellow cards in Katherine Sheehy and Jessica Wright while Gabriela Robles picked up a caution in the final seconds.
FIRST HALF
The Matadors outshot the Gauchos 6-1 in the first half but UCSB nearly came away with the first goal in the seventh minute when Dylan Lewis hit the crossbar from the top of the box. Bethany Fitzsimmons took the Matadors' first three shots early on before she put a shot on frame in the 26th minute. Later in the half, the Gauchos committed a foul at the 25-yard mark leading to a solid look at the net from straight away. DeWitt took the free kick and found the right corner netting to put the Matadors on top in the 34th minute.
The Gauchos earned their only corner kick of the half moments after the CSUN goal but could not come up with a shot. The teams traded possessions in the final minutes of the half as CSUN went into the break ahead by a goal.
SECOND HALF
CSUN continued to earn opportunities at the net right out of the halftime break. After Fitzsimmons had her shot blocked, Hanna DeWeese saved a shot from Kiley Voss in the 50th minute. Alexis White almost had her shot go into the net when DeWeese punched away White's attempt into the crossbar.
Although credited with one save in the second half, Delgado made several key plays in the box throughout to limit Gaucho scoring chances. Emma Vanderhyden put UCSB's only shot on frame in the 79th minute but Delgado made a clean two-handed save on the play. The Big West's top goal scorer coming in, Shaelan Murison, was also held to no shots in the contest.
UCSB earned one final look with 10 seconds remaining after a CSUN yellow card stopped the clock. However, the Matadors withstood the final look at the net, keeping the ball outside of the box as time expired.
GAME NOTES
With DeWitt's goal, the Matadors now have 11 players that have scored goals this season while 15 have registered at least one point. Five Matador field players saw all 90 minutes on the field, which include Amanda Martin, Sydney Gilbert, Amber Edemann, Kacie Garrity and Robles.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH KEITH WEST
"I thought we were extremely organized, disciplined and communicated well. We followed the game plan very well tonight. [Amanda] Delgado was outstanding tonight - talk about a 'keeper staying on their head, she did that tonight. Tonight's shutout is a big testament to our backline as a whole and even our front runners did a heck of a job defensively. In order to beat a great team like Santa Barbara, you have to play a great game and I felt we got pretty close to that."
"I think tonight were the most minutes Avery's played all year and its because she's playing well. This was probably her best game she's played as a Matador and I thought she was a big part of tonight's win."
UP NEXT
The Matadors will celebrate Senior Night next Thursday (Oct. 24) when the Matadors host UC Irvine at 7 p.m. Prior to the match, the Matadors will honor seniors Martin and Edemann in a special pregame ceremony.
