CSUN Hosts UC Irvine on Senior Night, Visits UC Davis This Week

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (9-4-3, 3-1 Big West) begins the final stretch of the regular season this week with a pair of conference tests. The Matadors host UC Irvine on Senior Night on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. before heading to UC Davis on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches are scheduled to stream live on BigWest.TV. Prior to Thursday's match, the Matadors will honor seniors Amanda Martin and Amber Edemann in a pre-game ceremony.
The Matadors picked up their third-straight win last Thursday, defeating UC Santa Barbara 1-0. CSUN held the Gauchos to just four shots including one on goal while junior Avery DeWitt scored the game-winner off a free kick in the 34th minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Delgado notched her fifth clean sheet of the season while the Matadors registered their eighth shutout as a team.
DeWitt became the 11th Matador to score a goal this year and the 15th to register a point. Her goal is the second of her career and the first since she hit the back of the net against Cal Poly two seasons ago.
CSUN heads into the second half of the Big West season in third place in the conference standings with nine points but just two points out of first place. Cal State Fullerton still leads the league with 11 points and followed closely by Hawai'i at 10 points. After CSUN, UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine have seven points while Cal Poly has four. There is a three-way tie for seventh place as Long Beach State, UC Riverside and UC Davis all have three points. The top four teams in the conference at the end of the regular season will move on to the Big West Tournament beginning Nov. 7.
On the Big West leaderboard, CSUN leads the league in goals-against-average (0.72) while it's tied with Cal State Fullerton with a conference-best eight shutouts. Delgado leads all goalkeepers in goals-against-average (0.83) while she is tied for first place with her five shutouts. The Matador 'keeper is also tied for second in wins (6) and ranked sixth in saves (42). Sophomore Alexis White is fourth in goals scored with five and fifth in points with 11. Junior Bethany Fitzsimmons is also on the Big West's Top 10 in goals scored (3, 10th place) and points (8, 10th place).
The Matadors lead the all-time series with UC Irvine 10-8-4. CSUN's three-match win streak in the series was snapped at UCI last season with the Anteaters coming away with a 3-0 win. Two seasons ago, Sydney Gilbert scored the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over the Anteaters at Matador Soccer Field.
CSUN is 8-5-3 against UC Davis in the all-time series and is looking for its first win since 2014 (4-0). After the team played three-straight scoreless draws from 2015-17, the Aggies won in overtime over the Matadors last season, 1-0, on a golden goal from Mahlah Catline.
A Closer Look at UC Irvine
The Anteaters come in with a 3-10-1 record and 2-1-1 mark in Big West play. UCI did what no other team has done this season, shutout Cal State Fullerton as the teams played to a 0-0 draw last Friday. The program's all-time winningest head coach, Scott Juniper is in his 13th season at the helm.
Sophomore Scarlett Camberos has scored three of the team's 10 goals this season while she has dished out two assists for a team-high eight points. The senior tandem of Jessica Miclat and Carley Brown have also hit the back of the net twice apiece. Senior Maddie Newsom has accounted for most of the Anteaters' minutes in goal, accumulating 33 saves and a 1.96 GAA. As a team, UCI is third in the league in shot on goal percentage (.471) and assists (13).
A Closer Look at UC Davis
The Aggies hold a 6-10 record and 1-5 league record heading into Sunday's match with the Matadors. UC Davis went 1-1 last week on the road, beating Long Beach State 2-1 before falling to UC Riverside 2-0. Head coach Tracy Hamm is in her first season at the helm of the Aggies.
The trio of senior Janae Gonzalez, sophomore Casey Palmer and freshman Leslie Fregoso have each scored three times, which accounts for half of the Aggies' goal total. Junior Nicki Rucki has seen the most minutes in net on the team, totaling 43 saves and a 1.30 GAA. UC Davis comes in second in the conference in shots (206) and shots on goal (88).Â
