CSUN Prevails in OT Over UC Irvine on Senior Night
10/24/2019 10:03:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---A penalty kick from Bethany Fitzsimmons lifted CSUN Women's Soccer (10-4-3, 4-1 Big West) past UC Irvine 1-0 on Senior Night at Matador Soccer Field. Senior defenders Amanda Martin and Amber Edemann helped lead the Matadors to their ninth shutout of the season while sophomore Amanda Delgado picked up five saves to pick her sixth individual clean sheet.
CSUN narrowly outshot UCI 13-12 including 6-5 in shots on goal. Corner kicks were tied at 5-5 while CSUN was whistled for 15 of the 24 total fouls on the night. Alexis White was shown the yellow card along with UCI's Kala McDaniel and Maddy Chavez.Â
FIRST HALF
On a windy Matador Soccer Field, the Anteaters went on the attack early, benefiting from a breeze that traveled right to left. Mckenzie Madison would nearly put the Anteaters ahead when she hit the crossbar from the top center of the box. Madison's shot bounced in front of the goal where Destinee Manzo sent a second shot just wide right. Delgado made two saves in the first half to help keep the match scoreless.
The Matadors came away with four shots of their own in the first half but none reached the frame. Martin had good field positioning near the 25-yard mark on a free kick in the 29th minute but her shot went high.
SECOND HALF
Now going with the wind in the second half, the Matadors put their first shot on frame in the 55th minute when Sydney Gilbert headed the ball from inside the box forcing a two-handed save from Maddie Newsom. Delgado made back-to-back saves near the 59th-minute mark, one of which on a diving save to her left to stop a shot from Jessica Miclat near the right post.
Perhaps the Matadors' best look of the second half came on a set piece in the 79th minute. Cindy Arteaga sent in a looping kick into a crowd in the box when Kacie Garrity found room for a header to the left corner of the goal. However, a UCI defender kept the ball out of the net with a timely stop. The teams traded looks in a wild final minute of regulation that included a collision in the UCI box between Newsom and White as time expired.
OVERTIME
Newsome rebounded from the collision minutes before to save a shot from Kiley Voss in the 93rd minute while White missed a shot in the overtime period as well. The game would be decided in the 98th minute when Fitzsimmons' shot was blocked from inside the 18-yard line. Her shot ricocheted off Chavez, making contact with her hand. After the handball call, Fitzsimmons took the penalty kick and hit the left corner of the goal to give the Matadors the victory.
GAME NOTES
Fitzsimmons' goal was her fourth of the season, tying her career-high she set last season. She also finished with a game-high four shots and two on goal.
On the all-time Matador career win list, Delgado has moved into a sixth-place tie with Karen Comstock and Tawni Takagi with 12 career victories. Delgado has also climbed up to a sixth-place tie with Takagi with nine career shutouts.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH KEITH WEST
"We got unbelievable energy from our two seniors, Amanda and Amber. The juniors and seniors have really taken over this group. I'm a firm believer of energy, and the spirit of this group is really carrying us through the year. It's been a pretty special year how things are going down for us and I couldn't be more proud of them."
THE SENIOR CLASS SAID
"I'm going to be honest, it wasn't our best game but there's a spirit and energy that hasn't broken the entire year that keeps us in games," said Edemann.
"As much as every single game is important for us to get a win, tonight was a team win to celebrate the seniors and to show how far we've come," said Martin. "We're a team a right now in control of our destiny and I think tonight showed we're really pushing for that conference title."
