HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Matadors outshot the Gauchos 5-2 in the first half with two of the attempts on goal from Daniel Trejo. Both shots were saved by UCSB goalie Ben Roach.
- UC Santa Barbara attacked early as Will Baynham's effort was saved by David Preys 4:29 into the second half. UCSB maintained the possession which resulted in Preys saving a Sahid Conteh attempt 47 seconds later.
- The Matadors' Johnny Rodriguez had a pair of shots blocked by the Gauchos' defense midway through the second half. The next two UC Santa Barbara efforts were wide.
- Preys was forced to leave the match in the 80th minute due to an injury. Paul Lewis replaced Preys in net.
- In the 82nd minute, Trejo worked his way inside where his blast was turned away by Roach. Roach saved Wolfgang Prentice's attempt in the 85th minute.
- A Noah Billingsley shot for UCSB was blocked in the 86th which was followed by a Brenden Hildreth attempt that went wide.
- Billingsley's broke away past the CSUN defense in the 30 seconds. He dribbled into inside the 18-yard box where Lewis successfully challenged him for a save and sent the match into overtime.
- The lone UC Santa Barbara (10-3-4, 3-1-2 Big West) shot of the first overtime came at the 98:22 mark where Lewis earned a save off a Billingsley shot. Prentice went wide in the final minute for the only CSUN threat of the period.
- The second overtime was played mostly in the midfield with neither team putting up a shot in the final 10 minutes of the match.
- The Matadors would out shoot UC Santa Barbara 11-9 for the night. Roach would tally four saves for UCSB. The Gauchos held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH TERRY DAVILA
- "To shutout the top scoring offense in the Big West Conference says a lot about our goalkeeping, our backline, and our team defense. Both David and Paul are excellent goalkeepers. It is a testament to both of them to always stay ready and always being ready to compete. They have pushed each other all year long, but what I love about them, is that they pull for each other and they are happy when the other does well."
