Matadors Host Cal Poly in Big West Home Opener

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (7-4-3, 1-1 Big West) opens up a three-match homestand this Thursday when the Matadors take on Cal Poly at 7 p.m.
CSUN kicked off Big West play last week with a road stretch that included a Thursday match at Hawai'i and Sunday night match at UC Riverside. After dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker in overtime to the Rainbow Wahine, the Matadors bounced back with a comeback 3-1 triumph over the Highlanders.
Freshman Cora Willcot exploded offensively last week with a goal in each match. Willcot scored her first career goal against Hawai'i, which gave the Matadors a one-goal advantage. Three nights later, Willcot was set up nicely by senior Amanda Martin and freshman Kacie Garrity for what would be the game-winning goal approximately 19 seconds before halftime. With her goal on Thursday, Willcot became the eighth Matador to score at least once this season.
Sophomore Alexis White tallied a career-high two goals in the win over UC Riverside, becoming the first Matador to record a brace in a single game since Cynthia Sanchez scored twice against the same Highlander team in 2017. White's two strikes stretched her team-high goal total to five this season to go with 11 points. Junior Bethany Fitzsimmons and freshman Amya LawsonKitchen were each credited with an assist on White's goals, giving the Matadors nine different players with one assist on the year.
On the Big West leaderboard, sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Delgado is ranked second in the league in goals-against-average (0.98) and tied for second place in shutouts (3) with teammate Taylor Thames. Delgado is also in third place in saves (38) and wins (4). Offensively, White is ranked in fourth place with her five goals while Fitzsimmons is tied for seventh with three goals. White is also fifth in points, followed by Fitzsimmons who is tied for ninth (7).
As a team, the Matadors remain the Big West leaders in GAA (0.82) while they are tied with Cal State Fullerton in shutouts (6). CSUN is also tied with UC Santa Barbara with the second-most goals scored with 17 this season.
In the all-time head-to-head series, the Matadors are 8-8-3 against Cal Poly heading into Thursday. The Mustangs snapped a four-match skid last season with a 1-0 victory over the Matadors at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. CSUN has won the last two at Matador Soccer Field in the series including a high-scoring 3-2 decision in 2017.
With a win on Thursday, CSUN Women's Soccer would notch its 200th victory in school history. The Matadors are currently playing their 25th season of women's soccer.Â
A Closer Look at Cal Poly
The Mustangs (3-8-1, 0-1 Big West) dropped a 2-1 decision to Long Beach State on Thursday to open Big West play as the Beach rallied for goals in the 84th and 85th minute to come from behind. Cal Poly has gone 0-6-1 on the road this season. Head coach Alex Crozier is in his 28th season at the helm of the Mustangs.
Freshman midfielder Camille Lafaix is tied for fifth place in the Big West in goals scored with four while she is eighth in points with 10. Seven other Mustangs have hit the back of the net including freshman Nikki Trucco who has a goal and an assist. In net, senior Sophia Brown has a 1.72 GAA with 53 saves and a shutout on the year.
