HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUN forced six San Francisco turnovers in the first five minutes of the first quarter as the Matadors led 7-5 at the opening media timeout of the game. An 11-0 Dons' run out of the media timeout resulted in a seven-point USF lead.Â
- San Francisco (2-1) finished the first period by outscoring CSUN 18-4 and led 23-13 after 10 minutes. The spurt would extend to 24-4 before Lauren Shymkewicz's layup occurred at 6:32 of the second period. Shymkewicz would score seven-second period points as CSUN trailed 41-27 at halftime.Â
- The Dons outscored the Matadors 11-5 over the first four minutes of the third period to push the lead to 20. San Francisco led 63-41 after 30 minutes. The closest CSUN would get in the fourth quarter was 16 when Shymkewicz put back an offensive rebound for a basket at the 2:58 mark.Â
- Five of the seven players who dressed in uniform for San Francisco scored in double figures. Mikayla Williams posted a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds. Abby Rathbun scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds. Leilah Vigil scored 12 points and had 19 rebounds. Dolapo Balogun scored 14 whiles while Lucie Hoskova tallied 13.
- Three of the seven Matadors who were in uniform scored in double figures. Jordyn Jackson scored a career-high 20 points. Shymkewicz, a senior, reset her career-high with 14 points. She also tied her career-high with nine rebounds. De'Jionae Calloway scored 13 points.Â
- USF outrebounded CSUN 59-39, 22-18 on the offensive glass. The Dons outshot the Matadors 46.2% (31-of-73) to 26.9% (24-of-78). CSUN forced 16 San Francisco turnovers, compared to 11 for the Matadors. Â
- "At the end of the day, I thought they were tougher than we were. It was a matter of rebounding. I thought we didn't get a lot of second-chance opportunities until late in the second half. They got second chance opportunities right from the beginning which obliviously let them shoot a better percentage. We had some really good defensive possessions but we wouldn't finish with a box out or didn't do what we need to do to end the possession. Offensively we were more aggressive, which we were working on. So, I thought Lauren stepped up and made some plays. Jordyn scored later in the game. We will go back to practice and get ready for Portland."
