FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball returns home for the first time in over two weeks when it hosts Fresno State on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. inside The Matadome. The game will stream live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health through BigWest.TV with Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister on the call.
Fans are encouraged to come early to attend the Matador Friendsgiving event held on The Matadome West Lobby at 2 p.m. Free pizza and wings are available to CSUN students. At the game, the first 50 students receive a free Chaos Student Section t-shirt.
The Matadors (0-7) finished the Roman Legends Classic presented by Old Trapper earlier this week with a pair of games held by Green Bay. CSUN fell in both contests, losing to Colgate 64-56 on Sunday before dropping a heartbreaker to Green Bay on Monday, 85-84.
Last Sunday, CSUN shook off a shaky start to take a 22-20 lead into halftime over Colgate. The teams traded five leads in the second half as the Matadors took a 56-55 lead on a jumper from junior Terrell Gomez. However, the Raiders finished the game on a 9-0 run, holding the Matadors scoreless for the final 2:44 to pick up the win. Five Matadors scored in double figures, led by Gomez's 12 while junior Lance Coleman II and sophomores Darius Brown II, Michael Ou and Elijah Harkless all had 10 points.
The Matadors got off to another slow start on Monday against the Phoenix. Green Bay would build a 19-point first-half lead before the Matadors ended the half outscoring the Phoenix 25-12. CSUN would fight all the way back in the second half and take a 74-70 lead at one point. Both sides enjoyed slim leads in the final moments before Gomez sent the Matadors ahead by two points with 1:24 to play. The Phoenix though picked up the go-ahead 3-pointer on the next possession and held on the rest of the way.
Looking at the CSUN record book, Gomez is just 10 points back of Calvin Chitwood (2004-08) and George Robnett (1970-74) for 14th place on the Matador career scoring list. Standing at 1,149 points, Gomez can also catch Markus Carr (1998-02) for 13th place with 24 more points. Gomez became the second Matador in team history to reach 200 career made 3-pointers earlier this season as he continues to inch closer to all-time leader Josh Greene (2010-14). With 205 made 3-pointers, Gomez is just 24 treys away from breaking Greene's career mark of 228.
On the Big West leaderboard, Gomez is the league leader in scoring at 20.9 points per game while he also ranks second in free throw percentage (90.5) and minutes per game (36.6). Brown II is leading the Big West in assists per game and assists to turnover ratio (3.0). Also on the Big West's Top 10, freshman Brendan Harrick is fourth in the conference in 3-point percentage (50.0) while Harkless is seventh in steals per game (1.4). As a team, the Matadors are tops in the conference in 3-point makes per game (8.3).
The Matadors and Fresno State will face off for the 34th time in team history on Saturday, however much of that history took place when CSUN was a Division II member. The teams have met just eight times in the Matadors' Division I history with the Bulldogs winning seven of those games. Overall, Fresno State has won the last four meetings including an 89-73 decision at the Save Mart Center in the teams' last game in Nov. 2017. The Matadors seek their first win over Fresno State since winning 69-66 in Nov. 1999. CSUN is hosting the Bulldogs for the first time since Feb. 2012 when Fresno State prevailed 62-49.
A Closer Look at Fresno State
The Bulldogs come in with a 2-3 record after a loss last Wednesday to Saint Mary's, 68-58. Fresno State looks to pick up its first win away from Save Mart Center as its other two losses this season have come on the road to nationally-ranked Oregon (71-57) and San Diego (72-66). Entering his second season at the helm, head coach Justin Hutson led Fresno State to a 23-9 record a year ago and a third-place finish in the Mountain West Conference (13-5 record).
Freshman Jarred Hyder has led the Bulldogs in scoring this season, posting 17.8 points per game on 53.2 percent shooting. Averaging nearly a double-double, senior Nate Grimes has registered 10.0 points and 9.2 rebounds on the year. As a team, the Bulldogs average 70.0 points per game and limit the opposition to 66.4 points.
