CSUN Travels to LMU Wednesday; Matadors Host No. 11 UCLA Saturday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The CSUN women's basketball team wraps up a four-game road trip at Loyola Marymount before returning to The Matadome to host No. 11 UCLA.

A noon start, Wednesday's game is LMU's Kid's Day in which several local elementary schools are scheduled to be in attendance. The game will be streamed by the WCC Network.

The Lions fell to both Georgetown and Yale during Loyola Marymount's Thanksgiving Tournament last weekend to drop to 2-6 on the season. Three players led by Raychel Stanley are averaging in double-figures for the Lions. Stanley is scoring 11.6 points per game. She is second on the team in rebounding at 5.9 per game.

Chelsey Gipson is scoring 10.9 points per game while Jasmine Jones, the team leader in rebounding (6.6) is scoring at a 10.6 ppg clip. This is the 18th meeting between CSUN and LMU. The Lions defeated the Matadors 73-52 last season in Northridge to take a 12-5 series lead. Â

The Matadors welcome the Bruins to The Matadome Saturday. David Gascon will have the call on BigWest.tv beginning at 4 p.m.

The Bruins improved to 7-0 with a pair of wins at the Virginia Cavalier Classic last weekend. UCLA is ranked 11th in both the AP Top 25 and USA Today/WBCA Top 25 polls. At 18.7 points per game, Michaela Onyenwere is 43rd in Division I in scoring entering this week. She is shooting 54% from the field and 83% from the free-throw line.

Japreece Dean compliments Onyenwere as she is scoring 15.7 points per game. Dean was named Pac-12 Player of the Week Dec. 2 after averaging 16.7 points, 5.7 assists, and 5.3 rebounds in a 3-0 week of action.

This is the first time that CSUN and UCLA are playing since Dec. 20, 2012, when the Matadors picked up their first victory over a ranked opponent at the Division I level as CSUN defeated UCLA 77-72 in Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins lead the all-time series 9-1. Â

The Matadors (2-6) split a pair of games at the Pacific Tiger Turkey Tip-Off last weekend in Stockton. CSUN lost 68-58 to SMU in the semifinals before defeating Indiana State 67-59 in the third-place game. Freshman Deja Williams averaged 17 points per game during the tournament including a season-best 20 against Indiana State.

Meghann Henderson, the Big West leader in steals per game (3.0), averaged 12.5 points per game during the tournament last weekend. Henderson has made 24 steals this season and is 18th in Division I in the category and is 25th in Division I in steals per game (3.0). Â

Lauren Shymkewicz leads the Big West in blocked shots with 16. She reset her career-high with five blocks against Indiana State and her total is 28th in Division I this week.
