The Matadors are coming off a close loss at UC Santa Barbara last Wednesday, 70-64. CSUN came out strong, scoring the first 11 points of the game but the Gauchos would fight back and lead for most of the second half. Despite shooting just 1-for-21 from 3-point range, the Matadors were able to trim an 11-point deficit to two late in the game before UCSB held on down the stretch.
Freshman Lamine Diane scored 28 points to lead all scorers at UCSB as he hit 12-of-29 from the field. Sophomore Terrell Gomez added 10 points while junior Rodney Henderson Jr. finished with nine points and seven rebounds.Â
Diane reached another milestone last week, as he stretched his field goals made total to 232, which are the most recorded in a single season in the team's Division I era. Overall, Diane is second in CSUN history in field goals, behind only George Robnett who made 267 shots during the 1973-74 season. Already this season, Diane has tied the Matadors' Division I era single-game point record with 39 at Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 30. He also scored 34 points in his Matador debut, which are the most by any CSUN player in their first college basketball game.
Heading into the week, Diane leads the nation in field goals made while he ranks eighth in points per game (24.3), 10th in rebounds per game (10.7) and 28th in blocks per game (2.2). The freshman from Senegal also leads the Big West Conference in all three categories. Atop the Big West in 3-point field goals made, Gomez is 15th in the nation in the category with 82 treys. Freshman Darius Brown II leads the Big West in assists per game (5.6) while he currently ranks seventh in the country in assists-turnover ratio (3.4).
The Matadors still remain among the league leaders in several categories as they are first in points per game (77.4), field goal percentage (46.9) and assists per game (16.0). CSUN is also second in blocks per game (4.4), third in steals per game (6.4) and fourth in 3-point percentage (35.7).
UC Davis leads the all-time series with CSUN 21-19. The Aggies have dominated the series over the last seven seasons, winning 13 of the last 15 meetings including 10 straight. Despite the 10-straight losses in the series, the Matadors have played in a number of close games over the span including two overtime contests and eight games decided by 10 points or fewer. Last season, the Aggies won both meetings by the identical score of 63-56. CSUN seeks to snap a nine-game skid at UC Davis and post its first win on the road since 2008-09.
