Matadors Fall Just Short to Fullerton, 78-71
2/16/2019 9:42:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Freshman Lamine Diane's 14th double-double of the season was not enough in CSUN Men's Basketball's (10-16, 4-6 BWC) loss to Cal State Fullerton 78-71 on Saturday evening at The Matadome. Diane finished with 25 points and 17 rebounds while sophomore Terrell Gomez added 18 points, five rebounds and three assists. Freshman Darius Brown II chipped in with 12 points, seven rebounds and five rebounds. The Matadors trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half before rallying late but the Titans, who are in second place in the Big West, would make enough plays down the stretch to pick up the win.
Despite out-rebounding the Titans 42-40 and collecting 17 offensive rebounds that led to 18 second-chance points, the Matadors were hampered by sluggish shooting throughout the night. CSUN finished shooting 36.5 percent from the field while the Titans shot at a 53.7 percent clip. CSUN would go 7-of-22 from 3-point range (31.8 percent) and shot 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from the free throw line.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"First of all, that's an NCAA Tournament team from a year ago. Their solid, old and they defended us pretty well. We had some looks, I thought early in the game Lamine settled for some fall-aways and those types of things. In the second half, he adjusted. We've got to get Rocket [Henderson Jr.] out of the funk he's been in. He's got to make some shots. Terrell struggled a little bit from three. We've just got to be a little more efficient.
I think each player can do a little bit more whether it's rebounding, defense and foul shooting, there's so much when you dig into each player. We've just got to stay positive right now, keep our heads up and get ready for the next game."
FIRST HALF
CSUN got off to a strong start, scoring the first seven points of the game and eventually building a 10-2 lead after a Brown 3-pointer. Diane threw down a slam dunk to at the 16:09 mark but the next eight-plus minutes would be rough for the Matadors. CSUN missed 15 consecutive shots and committed five turnovers over the stretch, which allowed the Titans to go on a 17-2 run.
The Matadors quickly fought back, making three-straight shots, capped off by a 3-pointer from Gomez to cut a nine-point deficit to two. The Titans would lean on Kyle Allman Jr. throughout the night as the senior scored 12 first-half points to keep his team in front. Allman Jr. knocked down a 3-pointer to push the lead to 31-25 but CSUN closed to within two points after a Diane layup at the 2:37 mark. Fullerton scored the next five points before Gomez hit a late 3-pointer to cut the Titan lead to 38-34 at halftime.
SECOND HALF
The second half began with four-straight misses for the Matadors, which helped Fullerton go back up by eight points. Diane would heat up in the early minutes of the second half, scoring seven-straight Matador points to bring the Matadors to within 51-48. Rodney Henderson Jr. made it a one-point game on a layup and he later knocked down a 3-pointer to tie the game at 53-53. Diane converted on a jumper to tie the game once more with 11:36 to go but the Matadors would go cold again from the field for another pivotal stretch.
CSUN missed nine of 10 shots over an 8:09 stretch, which also saw the Matadors miss five free throws. Allman Jr. scored nine points during the stretch to help give the Titans a 72-59 lead. The Matadors showed little quit down the stretch as they quickly went on a 9-0 run, highlighted by a timely 3-pointer from Cameron Gottfried to pull within 72-68 with 1:31 left to play. Playing with poise, the Titans would not surrender their lead in the closing moments. Allman Jr. hit four timely free throws and Jackson Rowe dunked the ball late to ice the win for Fullerton.
