Late Foul Costs CSUN at Long Beach State
2/20/2019 11:01:00 PM | Men's Basketball
LONG BEACH, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (10-17, BWC 4-7) dropped a heartbreaker to Long Beach State on Wednesday night at Walter Pyramid by the final of 80-78. Leading by as many as 16 points in the second half, the Matadors held on to a one-point lead late but a foul with 0.8 seconds on the clock gave the Beach a chance to make three free throws to steal the win. Â
Freshman Darius Brown II led the Matadors with 19 points and five assists while freshman Lamine Diane posted his 15th double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Rodney Henderson Jr. added 15 points and sophomore Terrell Gomez chipped in 14 points.
CSUN shot an even 50.0 percent for the night and knocked down 7-of-19 from 3-point range (36.8 percent). On the flip side, the Beach made 35.8 percent of their shots while hitting 9-of-28 from long range (32.1 percent). In free throws, each team made 13-of-17 (76.5), however CSUN missed two costly free throws late.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"Well, there's a lot of things to say. Obviously, number one you can't foul there. We're ahead. Even if he makes a tough running three, New Mexico beat us on a running bank shot, you live with those. But you can't foul. That's inexcusable and just a bad error. The other thing is we missed two front ends of 1-and-1's [at the free throw line]. Even bigger than that, it was our inability to get a defensive rebound. We've got to rebound the ball and we've got to finish a game. Obviously the way we lost was really a tough one. We played well enough and just didn't make it."

FIRST HALF
The Matadors shot the lights out in the first half, shooting above 55 percent in the period, as they led for most of the half. A total of seven Matadors scored in the opening period, led by Henderson Jr.'s 11 points who made three of his team's six 3-pointers. The tandem of Diane and Gomez also got into the scoring act as they made back-to-back jumpers to put CSUN ahead 17-10 at the 13:16 mark. Henderson Jr. missed his first 3-pointer but he found the bottom of the net on his next to push the CSUN lead to double digits (22-12).
Â
Henderson Jr's scored five-straight points at one point in the period while Gomez nailed a 3-pointer at the 6:29 mark to make it a 32-21 game. After a jumper from Deishuan Booker that trimmed the CSUN lead to single digits, the Matadors answered with another trey from Henderson Jr. Michael Ou later made two free throws to give CSUN its biggest lead at 42-28 at the 2:10 mark but the Beach made a late basket to pull within 11 (42-31) at the break.
Â
SECOND HALF
Brown started the second half strong, scoring the first five points to give CSUN a 47-31 lead. The Beach would trim the lead to 11 points after the first media timeout but CSUN scored the next six, capped off by a 3-pointer from Brown. Trailing by 16 points with 13:14 to go, the Beach chipped away at the Matador lead as the second half progressed. A 7-2 run brought LBSU within 61-52 before a basket from Henderson Jr. However, three empty possessions, coupled by an 8-0 LBSU run made it a 63-60 game with 7:15 on the clock.
Diane gave the Matadors a bit of breathing room with a layup, and Ron Artest III made back-to-back shots to push the lead back to nine (71-62). CSUN though would only make one basket over the final 3:50 of the contest. After the lead was trimmed to three, Diane would find Brown up ahead for a timely layup, stretching the lead to 76-71 with 1:03 left to play. After two made free throws from LBSU, Cameron Gottfried missed the front-end of a 1-and-1 free throw, leading to a Booker basket on the other end.
The teams traded free throws until Gomez was fouled with five seconds to go. Gomez missed the first free throw, the first of a 1-and-1 opportunity, giving the Beach one last look, trailing 78-77. Booker took the ball up the floor and was fouled with less than a second on the clock. Booker calmly made three straight at the line to put LBSU up for the first time since the opening minutes of the first half. With one last look, the Matadors tried a cross court pass but the ball was intercepted to end the game.
GAME NOTES
With 17 points, Diane has now scored the third-most points in a single season in team history with 620 points, as he passed Stephen Maxwell (2013-14) on the list who scored 612 in 2013-14. Diane is just four points away from second place, occupied by George Robnett (1973-74) and 26 points from tying Brian Heinle (2000-01) for the top spot. In addition, Diane, who has made 259 field goals this season, needs to make nine more field goals to break the school's single season record, currently held by Robnett.
