Early Runs Hold Up for CSUN in Win Over K-State
2/17/2019 4:42:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (2-1) scored three early runs and blanked Kansas State over the final eight innings to take game three of its series, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at Matador Field. Jayson Newman racked up a pair of doubles with three RBI while sophomore Brandon Bohning scored twice and had two hits. Isaiah Nunez pitched six quality innings, scattering eight hits and allowing two runs en route to notching his first win of the year.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"There were experienced guys on the mound today. Isaiah Nunez was so interesting to watch because he can struggle a bit but he can right his ship pretty quickly and he did that from the first on. I liked how he stayed after it. He kept pitching and he did not get rattled one bit today.
Jayson's [Newman] an interesting guy. He's a good hitter. He's done it in summer baseball because of lineup circumstances but he can really hit. Today, you saw a little bit of that. I think he's going to be a great force for us in the middle of the order."
GAME BREAKDOWN
Nunez would run into trouble in the first inning where he surrendered his only two runs of the day. Tyler Hughes led off the game with a solo home run that just snuck over the outstretched glove of Denzel Clarke at the left field wall. A second run would come across later in the frame on a Dylan Phillips sacrifice fly. Despite giving up three hits to begin the game, Nunez bounced back by retiring the next two batters before picking off Will Brennan at first base.
Trailing by 2-0, the Matadors wasted little time fighting back into the game. In the home half of the first, Bohning stroked a one-out single to left field before advancing to second base on a fielding error. After Bohning stole third base, Kyle Barret reached first on a hit-by-pitch and Angelo Bortolin walked to load the bases. Needing a timely hit, Newman delivered with a two-run double to right field. Moments later, Wesley Ghan-Gibson had a productive at bat as he hit a sacrifice fly to third base to give CSUN a 3-2 edge.
It turned out a one-run cushion would be all Nunez and the Matadors would need in the game. Nunez stranded a pair of runners in the second inning and pitching around singles in the third and fourth innings. He ran into trouble in the fifth after giving up back-to-back singles with one out but catcher Victor Cerny would pick off Brennan again at first base for the second out. Nunez escaped the fifth unscathed when he fanned Jordan Maxson. The Matador senior left hander tossed a 1-2-3 sixth inning before handing off the ball to the bullpen in the seventh.
While the Wildcats were held off the scoreboard since the first, the Matadors also had difficulty cracking the scoring column as well. Brennan started the game for K-State and pitched six innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six.
Eleven-straight Matadors were retired in a row at one point before Andrew Lucas doubled in the seventh. CSUN though finally pushed across an insurance run in the eighth. In what looked to be an inning-ending double play with runners at the corner, Newman reached first base safely on an errant relay throw to first base. The fielder's choice brought home Bohning on the play.
The Matadors' bullpen pitched strong, tossing three shutout innings to seal the win. Cassius Hamm left a runner at second base in a scoreless seventh and Schriever recorded the final six out to pick up his first career save.
GAME NOTES
Nunez tied a career high with his five strikeouts on Sunday. Last season, he struck out five against Long Beach State (4/14/18) and UC Davis (5/12/18). Newman also drove in a career-high three runs in the win.
UP NEXT
The Matadors conclude a four-game series with the Wildcats on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. The game will stream live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health via Big West.TV.
