CSUN Hosts UC Davis on ESPN3 Saturday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (10-17, 4-7 BWC) looks to snap a four-game skid on Saturday night when the Matadors host UC Davis at 7 p.m. on ESPN3. Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister will be on the call in an audio broadcast on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health at 6:50 p.m.
The Matadors suffered a heartbreaking 80-78 defeat on Wednesday night at Long Beach State. CSUN led by as many as 16 points in the second half only to see the Beach make a late comeback. The Matadors would have a 76-71 lead in the final minute but Deishuan Booker scored seven points to turn the tables. Leading by a point, 78-77, in the final seconds, the Matadors committed a costly foul with 0.8 second on the game clock. Booker calmly knocked down three free throws to put his team ahead. CSUN was unable to get a shot off in the last second, securing a Beach victory.
Freshman Darius Brown II scored a team-high 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting to go with five assists and four rebounds. Three other Matadors scored in double figures including freshman Lamine Diane who poured in 17 points and 10 rebounds for his 15th double-double of the season. Junior Rodney Henderson Jr. had 15 points while sophomore Terrell Gomez added 14.
The loss on Wednesday dropped the Matadors to 4-7 in Big West play heading into Saturday. CSUN is sixth in the conference standings, behind UC Irvine (11-1), Cal State Fullerton (9-3), UC Santa Barbara (7-5), Hawai'i (7-5) and UC Davis (6-5). Just below CSUN is Long Beach State (4-8), UC Riverside (3-8) and Cal Poly (1-10). The top eight teams will make the Big West Tournament set for March 14-16 at the Honda Center. The magic number for CSUN to clinch a tournament spot is three.
With two-straight games at The Matadome, Diane is in position to break three Matador single-season records in front of the home crowd. With 620 points this season, Diane is three points away from second-place George Robnett (1973-74) and 26 points away from first-place Brian Heinle (2000-01) on the all-time Matador season scoring list. Diane is also second all-time in field goals made for a season with 259, which puts him eight away from Robnett for the top spot. Lastly, Diane has 57 blocks this season, which is five short of Tre Hale-Emerson's record of 62 he set in 2013-14. Along with Diane, Gomez is six 3-pointers short of Kyle Kerlegan's single-season record of 98 that was set during the Matadors' first Division I season in 1990-91.
Diane remains the national leader in field goals made this season while he is eighth in points per game (23.8), ninth in rebounds per game (10.9) and 13th in double-doubles. In the Big West, Diane leads the conference in points, rebounds and blocks per game this season. Brown is tops in the Big West in assists to turnover (3.0). Gomez ranks second in points per game (19.1) and second in free throw percentage (87.3).
UC Davis leads the all-time series with CSUN 22-19 and has won the last 11 meetings. The Matadors' last win over the Aggies was an 89-77 win on Feb. 13, 2014. In the 11-game losing streak, the Matadors have lost four home games and eight contests by 10 points or fewer. On Feb. 13, the Aggies prevailed at home 76-59. Gomez led the Matadors with 24 points in the loss at UC Davis while Diane added 20.
A Closer Look at UC Davis
The Aggies come in at 10-15 and 6-5 in Big West play. UC Davis' five-game winning streak was snapped at Cal State Fullerton on Thursday with a 62-58 defeat. The Aggies are 3-11 on the road this season. The team averages 65.5 points per game and limits opponents to 68.1 points. In league play, the Aggies lead the conference with 6.5 steals per game. Last season, the Aggies won the Big West regular season championship.
Missing Thursday's game, senior TJ Shorts II is eighth in the Big West at 14.2 points per game while he leads his squad in rebounding (5.0). Senior Siler Schneider is second on the team in scoring at 10.6 points per game. Junior Joe Mooney scored a team-high 21 points against the Matadors on Feb. 13 while junior Stefan Gonzalez tallied 15.
