Gomez's Game Winner Lifts CSUN Past UC Riverside
2/27/2019 9:07:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Sophomore Terrell Gomez hit a game-winning jumper with 1.6 seconds remaining to lift CSUN Men's Basketball (12-17, 6-7 BWC) to a 70-68 victory over UC Riverside on Wednesday evening at The Matadome. Gomez, who finished with a game-high 24 points, also broke the Matadors' all-time single season 3-point field goals made record after knocking down four treys to push his season total to 101. Freshman Lamine Diane posted his 17th double-double of the season with 22 points and 12 rebounds. With two blocks, Diane tied the Matadors' single-season blocks record with 62 this season.
In a game with 19 lead changes, the teams shot nearly identical from the field as the Matadors finished shooting 47.5 percent from the field while the Highlanders shot 47.4 percent. The Matadors made 6-of-18 3-pointers (33.3 percent) compared to UCR's 6-of-16 shooting from long range (37.5 percent). The Matadors outscored the opposition 17-9 in second-chance points.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"I thought it was a great win. It was a night where I felt we didn't defend them very well and I don't think we made a lot of shots we normally make. But we still found a way to win. I think that's a sign of a team growing up. There were times earlier in the year where with those combinations we wouldn't have found a way to win. Obviously, Terrell made a great shot there in the last play. I think Kaba did a great job. His four blocks in the second half were pivotal and he gave us great minutes."
FIRST HALF
The first half featured 14 lead changes as neither squad led by more than four points. Jared Pearre gave the Matadors' their biggest lead of the half at 6-2 on a slam dunk early on. Gomez would score all 10 of his first-half points in a row including a pair of 3-pointers to give him the school record in treys. Diane, who also scored 10 in the opening stanza, gave the Matadors a 20-17 lead off a feed from Rodney Henderson Jr.
The Highlanders would score four in a row to take a 21-20 lead only for the Matadors to take lead back on a 3-pointer from Henderson Jr. Near the five-minute mark, Diane scored four in a row and Darius Brown II followed with a jumper to put the Matadors ahead 32-29. CSUN held a two-point lead (33-31) with 2:25 remaining but the Highlanders closed the half on a 7-0 run, capped off a late 3-pointer from DJ McDonald.
SECOND HALF
The Highlanders would hold a 40-35 lead before CSUN went on a 7-0 run to build a 42-40 lead. The back-and-forth game continued as Zac Watson put the Highlanders ahead by three points (49-46). Gomez helped spark a 9-2 run, scoring seven of those points. The sophomore also nailed a 3-pointer at the 6:17 mark that put the Matadors ahead by their biggest margin at 62-55.
Mahamadou Kaba-Camara gave the Matadors solid minutes off the bench, tallying four blocked shots, two points and a steal. Kaba-Camara brought The Matadome crowd to their feet with a rim-rattling dunk off a pass from Gomez at the 3:03 mark. Leading 68-64, CSUN gave up four-straight points including a jumper from Callum McRae that evened the game with 1:11 on the clock.
Brown would miss a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession but Kaba-Camara picked up a huge block shot of Martin to keep the game tied. UCR would retain possession but McRae missed a short jumper in the lane as Diane pulled down the defensive rebound with less than 10 seconds remaining. After a CSUN timeout, the Matadors drew up a play where Gomez found room on a mid-range jumper. The sophomore drilled the shot to put CSUN ahead 70-68 with less than two seconds to go. McDonald heaved a last-second shot from beyond halfcourt as the buzzer sounded but came up short, giving the Matadors the victory.
GAME NOTES
The Matadors' 12 wins this season are the most for the team since the 2013-14 campaign. CSUN has now swept UC Riverside for the second time in three seasons. After missing the Big West Tournament last season, the Matadors have punched their ticket to the tourney this season with the win.
For the Highlanders, McRae finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
