Matadors Visit Hawai'i on Saturday Night

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (12-17, 6-7 BWC) makes the trek to Honolulu this weekend as the Matadors take on Hawai'i on Saturday evening at 10 p.m. PST. The game will air on BigWest.TV via Spectrum Sports in Honolulu. Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister are on the call in an audio broadcast on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health at 9:50 p.m.
The Big West Conference race is heating up with a little over a week to play in the regular season. The Matadors are tied for fifth in the league standings with UC Davis at 6-7. Above the Matadors, first-place UC Irvine is 12-1 this season, followed by Cal State Fullerton (10-4), UC Santa Barbara (8-6) and Hawai'i (7-6). In seventh place is Long Beach State (6-8) while UC Riverside (3-10) and Cal Poly (2-11) battling it out for the final Big West Tournament spot. CSUN can move up to a fourth-place tie with Hawai'i with a win on Saturday night. CSUN concludes the regular season next week hosting UCSB on Thursday before visiting UC Irvine on Saturday.
The Matadors won their second-straight home game in dramatic fashion, beating UC Riverside 70-68 at The Matadome on Wednesday. With the game tied up at 68-68 and less than 10 seconds to play, the Matadors set up sophomore Terrell Gomez for the game winner just before the final horn. It would be a record-breaking night for Gomez as he became the Matadors' all-time leader in 3-point field goals made. On the season, Gomez has made 101 3-pointers.
Freshman Lamine Diane posted his 17th double-double of the season against the Highlanders with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Mahamadou Kaba-Camara also gave the Matadors a lift with four blocks in the second half.
Finishing with two blocks in the contest, Diane tied Tre Hale-Edmerson for the most blocks in a single season in team history (62). Already this season, Diane has broken the Matadors' single season point record and field goals made record as he stands at 677 points 283 fields goals heading into Saturday. Diane is also expected to break the school's season rebound record, currently held by Paul McCracken (1970-71) who had 330. With 306 this season, Diane needs 25 more boards to hold the record.
In the national rankings, Diane leads the country in field goals made while he is seventh in points per game (24.2) and eighth in rebounds per game (10.9). He is the only player in the nation to average above 24 points, 10 rebounds and 2.0 blocks (Diane averages 2.2). In the Big West, Diane is tops in scoring, rebounding and blocks while Gomez is second in points per game (19.3) and free throw percentage (87.3). Freshman Darius Brown II is second in assists per game (5.5) and assists to turnover (3.1).
With a win on Jan. 17, Hawai'i is 16-5 against the Matadors in the all-time series. The Rainbow Warriors held off CSUN for an 84-79 win despite a game-high 30 points from Gomez along with 28 points from Diane. Hawai'i has won eight of the last nine meetings. Last season, the teams split their season series with each squad winning on the road. CSUN collected its second ever win at Hawai'i last season in a 77-71 triumph.
A Closer Look at Hawai'i
The Rainbow Warriors are 16-11 and 7-6 in league play this season. After winning three of four games, Hawai'i had a tough week on the road last week, falling at UC Santa Barbara 79-61 and Cal Poly (88-80). At the Stan Sheriff Center, Hawai'i is 13-4 including 5-2 in conference play. The 'Bows are first in the league in assists per game (15.7) and 3-point field goals made per game (8.7).
Three players average in double figures, led by Zigmars Raimo at 11.6 points per game to go with a team-best 6.1 rebounds. Jack Purchase is a close second in points per game (11.5) and rebounds per game (6.0) while Eddie Stansberry is posting 11.3 points per game. Sophomore Drew Buggs is just ahead of Brown for the Big West lead in assists per game at 5.6. As a team, Hawai'i averages 72.4 points per game.
