HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUN scored the first five points of the game UC Riverside held the Matadors to one point over the next 8:48 of the opening stanza. The teams would combine to shoot 7-for-33 in the first quarter as the Highlanders led 11-6 after 10 minutes.
- The Highlanders would push the run to 15-2 before the next CSUN field goal, a Channon Fluker layup a little over a minute into the second quarter, would occur. CSUN would cut the UCR lead to 15-11 before UC Riverside responded with a 11-2 spurt.
- Both teams improved their shooting in the second. UCR would go 9-of-13 from the field while CSUN would make 9-of-15 chances from the floor. A Fluker three-pointer with six second remaining in the first half cut the UCR advantage to 32-29 at the break.
- The Matadors got of a poor shooting start in the third, missing eight of the first nine attempts. The CSUN defense kept the Matadors in the game as UC Riverside could only extend the advantage to 36-33 midway through the stanza.
- Meghann Henderson drew a foul just before the media timeout and made both free throws to cut it to 36-35. Coming out of the media break, the teams traded baskets before Fluker tied the game at 38 with an old-fashioned three-point play.
- The Matadors regained the lead for the first time since being up 5-0 when Jordyn Jackson made a jumper with just under three to play in the third. Up by two, Juliana Louis connected on 1-of-2 free throws to extend the advantage to 41-38. Marina Ewodo halted a CSUN 10-2 run with a jumper to create a 41-40 score at the 1:23 mark.
- Louis was fouled on an offensive rebound. She extended the lead to 43-40 with a pair from the charity stripe. Jannon Otto scored on the ensuing UC possession. UCR regained the lead with 25 seconds remaining in the third on a Malou De Kergret basket.
- CSUN would go scoreless again, this time for over four minutes (over the third and fourth quarters) as the Highlanders would go up 48-43 before a Jackson layup broke the drought with just over six minutes to play.
- That would be as close as CSUN would get as a De Kerget three-pointer on the ensuing UC possession extended the lead to six and would propel UCR onto the victory. The Highlanders outscored the Matadors 19-8 in the final 10 minutes.
- Fluker was 6-of-8 from the field in the first half for 14 points. The 6-4 center ended the day with her 73rd career double-double, 21 points, and 12 rebounds. Serafina Maulupe scored 10 points for the Matadors.
- The Highlanders take over sole possession of second place in the Big West. As a result, if the season ended tomorrow, UCR would receive a double-bye into the semifinals of the Big West Tournament. CSUN would be a three-seed or below and would only get the maximum of one bye at the conference tournament.
- UCR held CSUN to 2-of-16 shooting in the fourth quarter and 25.4% (16-63) for the game.
- Ewodo and Otto both scored 19 points to pace the Highlanders.
- "Anytime you shoot 25% from the field, it's going to be tough to win a basketball game. Some of that definitely should be credited to UCR and their defense, but we need to be much better at executing and recognizing where we have advantages offensively. That is my responsibility and I need to do a better job of making sure our young women have that understanding."
- "We will get back to work tomorrow to prepare for a Cal Poly team that will be ready to compete."
- CSUN travels to Cal Poly (6-19, 3-11 Big West) Saturday afternoon. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
