IOWA CITY, Iowa---Junior Sean Skelly drove in four runs to help CSUN Baseball (9-9) defeat Iowa 8-5 in the teams' series opener on Saturday at Duane Banks Field. Skelly reached base four times, collected two hits and smacked his first home run of the season. Seniors Kyle Barret and Wesley Ghan-Gibson and freshman Austin Elder all tallied two of the team's 11 hits. The Matador bullpen combined to toss 4.1 innings led by senior right hander Cassius Hamm who earned the win after throwing 3.1 innings with four strikeouts.
GAME BREAKDOWN
The Matadors would jump out to the early lead in the first behind three-straight two-out hits. After the first two batters were retired to start the game, Barret kept the inning alive with a double to left center field. Elder followed by sending the first pitch he saw down the right field line for a double to plate Barret. Skelly would step to the plate next and stroke a single to center field, bringing home Elder to make it a 2-0 game.
Walker Armstrong earned the start and found himself in trouble in the first inning. A passed ball on a would-be strikeout to end the first allowed the Hawkeyes to extend the frame. Eventually, Iowa had runners at the corners before Zeb Adreon laid down a bunt. Armstrong fielded his position and was able to throw out Tanner Wetrich at home plate.
The Hawkeyes though drew even in the second inning behind a timely two-out hit of their own. With runners at second and third base, Mitchell Boe hit a two-run single to tie the game at 2-2.
Iowa took the lead in the third on an RBI single from Adreon but the Matadors quickly answered in the top of the fourth. After Skelly drew a leadoff walk, Ghan-Gibson roped a game-tying RBI double down the left field line. CSUN played small ball in the fifth to take back the lead. Brandon Bohning worked a leadoff walk before stealing second base. Robert Bullard then legged out a bunt single to put runners at the corners. Bohning would touch home plate on an Austin Martin passed ball.
Armstrong pitched into the fifth inning but the Hawkeyes loaded the bases forcing a move to the bullpen. Hamm entered the fray and retired Lorenzo Elion to keep the Matadors in front.
Hamm steadied the ship nicely, retiring eight-straight batters to keep the Hawkeyes at bay. The relief work allowed the Matadors to pick up a clutch hit in the seventh to extend their lead. Again all with two outs, Barret doubled before Elder drew a walk to bring Skelly to the plate. Skelly delivered with a three-run blast on the first pitch to left field, pushing the lead to 7-3.
Hamm cruised until the eighth but the Hawekeys picked up three-straight hits including a two-run double from Trenton Wallace to pull within 7-5.
After the Matadors added a big insurance run on an RBI single from Ghan-Gibson in the top of the ninth, Blake Schriever looked for the save in the home half. Iowa threatened again, loading the bases with two outs but Schriever struck out Tanner Padgett to end the game.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"The offense started rallies and scored three times with two outs and no one on. Playing late in innings led to the win. Skelly had a big hit but the story became guys like Elder who reached base with two outs.
The bullpen scraped by today. We made pitches with runners on base but we can be sharper. We want to get better each day. Today was a start of the road trip to build on."
GAME NOTES
Schriever collected his fifth save of the season with a shutout ninth while Hamm improved to 2-0. Barret's two hits in the contest give the senior seven multiple-hit games, tying Bohning for the team lead. The Matadors' four doubles in the game also tied a season best.
UP NEXT
The Matadors play a doubleheader with Iowa on Sunday to conclude the series. Game one is set for 11 a.m. (PDT).
