Iowa Takes Series from CSUN with Doubleheader Sweep
3/17/2019 4:39:00 PM | Baseball
IOWA CITY, Iowa---Iowa defeated CSUN Baseball (9-11) twice by narrow margins on Sunday at Duane Banks Field. The Matadors came within a strike of taking the weekend series in the opener but Iowa rallied with two late runs to win 5-4. The Hawkeyes would hold off CSUN in the nightcap, 3-1.
Senior Kyle Barret racked up three hits in game one of the twin bill while three other Matadors finished with two hits on the day. CSUN received quality starting pitching in both games as sophomore Wesley Moore worked 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs with seven strikeouts and senior Isaiah Nunez tossed 6.2 innings with two earned runs allowed.
GAME ONE RECAP
Moore and Cam Baumann took turns putting up zeroes through the first three innings of game one with each hurler allowing one hit apiece.
The Matadors would finally break the scoreless tie in the fourth inning. After Wesley Ghan-Gibson doubled to kick off the inning, Robert Bullard stroked a two-out RBI single to put CSUN on the scoreboard. Bullard would steal second base before Denzel Clarke whacked a double down the left field line to make it a 2-0 game. CSUN added to its lead in the fifth inning behind an RBI single from Sean Skelly that plated Barret from third base.
Moore worked out of a jam in the fourth, leaving two runners in scoring position when he retired Trenton Wallace. He sat down the Hawkeyes in order in the fifth and tiptoed out of danger in the sixth, stranding two more runners on the base paths.
In the seventh though, Iowa picked up a timely hit to draw even. With runners at first and second base and one out, Mitchell Boe took Moore deep for a three-run home run to square the game at 3-3. Blaine Traxel came out of the bullpen and surrendered a triple along with a walk before striking out Ben Norman to end the inning and keep the game tied.
After seeing its lead disappear, the Matadors fought back in front in the eighth inning. Bullard reached on an error to begin the inning before Joey Cooper drew a walk. Brandon Bohning moved both runners up a base on a sacrifice bunt then Austin Elder delivered with a sacrifice fly two batters later.
Blake Schriever pitched out of trouble in the eighth inning, leaving two runners on base and would retire the first two batters in the ninth inning. One strike away from winning the game, Schriever walked Matt Berst on a 3-2 pitch. Norman followed with a single on a 1-2 pitch to put runners at the corners. Grant Judkins would come off the bench and provide the big blow, a two-run double that gave Iowa a 5-4 walk-off win.
GAME TWO RECAP
Judkins, who played the part of hero in the game one, would silence the Matador bats on the mound in game two. The right hander worked 8.0 innings, allowing just one run on three hits. Nunez though kept the Matadors in the game with his fourth quality start of the season.
Iowa plated an unearned run against Nunez in the first inning as Boe scored on a passed ball. In the third, the Hawkeyes added two more runs on an RBI single from Austin Martin and fielder's choice from Norman.
Nunez would settle down after the early runs to sit down 10-straight batters over the middle innings. Conner McCaffery broke up the string with a two-out double in the bottom of the sixth but the Matador defense eventually teamed up to tag out McCaffery between second and third base later in the frame.
While Nunez kept the Hawkeyes at bay, the Matadors' offense could not figure out Judkins. CSUN had just one base runner reach scoring position through the first seven innings. Blake Doremus hit a one-out double in the second inning and he later moved to third base on a passed ball before he was erased at home on a fielder's choice. Judkins would also limit the running game by picking off two runners on the base paths.
Still trailing by three in the eighth, Skelly reached to start the inning on an error. Judkins though retired the next three Matador batters in order to keep the score at 3-0. In the ninth, the Matadors finally knocked Judkins out of the game when Angelo Bortolin worked a leadoff walk.
Bohning greeted reliever Grant Leonard unkindly with a double to move Bortolin to third base. Two batters later, Barret brought in Bortolin on an RBI groundout. Representing the tying run at the plate, Elder would be retired by Leonard to end the game.
GAME NOTES
Barret and Bohning each collected their team-best eighth multiple-hit games of the season on Sunday. Doremus collected his first career hits with CSUN in the game as he went 2-for-3.
