UNLV Rallies Past CSUN, 6-5
3/19/2019 5:41:00 PM | Baseball
LAS VEGAS, Nev.---CSUN Baseball fell in heartbreaking fashion to UNLV 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Matadors took a 5-2 lead into the ninth inning but the Rebels rallies for four runs in the frame to pick up the win.
Â
Freshman Austin Elder went 3-for-4 with two RBI while junior Sean Skelly homered for the second time this season. On the pitching side, freshman Blake Sodersten worked a season-high 4.2 innings, striking out six and allowing two runs on seven hits.
Â
GAME BREAKDOWN
CSUN wasted little time jumping in front in the first inning. Brandon Bohning singled on the first pitch of the game before Kyle Barret rifled a double to center two pitches later. Elder followed with a bullet down the right field line that plated two runs. However, Elder would be thrown out at third on the play. Moments later, Skelly blasted a solo home run to left field to put the Matadors ahead 3-0.
Â
The Matadors manufactured a run in the second inning to push the lead to four. After Joey Cooper was hit by a pitch and Andrew Lucas singled, Denzel Clarke laid down a well-executed bunt to move both runners up a base. Bohning would hit the ball to the right side, scoring Cooper for the game's fourth run.
Sodersten worked a clean first inning before giving up a leadoff triple to Edarian Williams in the second. Duke Pahukoa would strike for an RBI single to put the Rebels on the scoreboard. Sodersten then rebounded to retire two of the next three batters. The freshman right hander struck out the side in the third inning and picked up a key double play in the fifth to keep UNLV at one run.
CSUN added to its lead in the fifth after Elder singled and right fielder Max Smith committed a fielding error, which allowed Barret to score all the way from first base.
Sodersten continued to cruise into the fifth inning, retiring the first two batters before the next three batters reached base safely. Jack Thomas-Wold would knock Soderten out of the game with an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-2.
The combination of Blaine Traxel and Cruz Daddario kept the Rebels off the scoreboard over the next three innings. Traxel recorded the final out in the fifth before retiring the side in order in the bottom of the sixth inning. Daddario entered in the seventh inning and pitched around two hits to throw two shutout frames.
The Matadors would take a three-run lead to the bottom of the ninth where the Rebels' bats finally came alive. Austin Pfeifer singled to start the inning then Jason Sharman reached on an infield single. On the Sharman hit, a costly Matador throwing error put runners at the corners before Grant Robbins stroked an RBI double. Two batters later, Dillon Johnson would hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to one. With runners at the corners and two outs, Wold provided the knock out blow with a two-run double to win the game for UNLV.
GAME NOTES
Bohning collected his team-high ninth multiple-hit game of the season after a 2-for-5 effort at the plate. Elder's two RBI are a season high for the freshman.

The Matadors conclude a five-game road trip with a midweek game against Pepperdine on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
