MALIBU, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (9-13) scored five runs in the ninth inning but it would not be enough as the Matadors fell to Pepperdine 9-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The trio of Wesley Ghan-Gibson, Sean Skelly and Blake Doremus all finished with with two hits apiece as Ghan-Gibson collected his second home run of the season. Freshman right hander Dwayne Angebrandt made his Matador debut out of the bullpen and tossed 4.1 innings, allowing one earned run.
GAME BREAKDOWN
The Waves would take advantage of a Matador miscue to put CSUN in a seven-run hole in the first inning. Freshman left hander Stone Shiffman retired the first two batters of the inning before giving up a single to Matthew Kanfer. Shiffman induced a groundball on the next batter but a CSUN error at third base kept the inning alive for the Waves. From there, the next six Pepperdine hitters would reach base resulting in seven unearned runs coming across.
Joe Caparis delivered the big blow in the first inning, a three-run double, while Reese Alexiades also had a two-run double. Angebrandt finally stopped the bleeding when he sat down Quincy McAffee, the 11th batter of the inning.
Angebradt would give up a run in the second inning before rebounding to retire seven batters in a row. Still pitching in the fifth inning, Angebrandt gave up a leadoff single before sitting down the next three Wave hitters.
While Angebrandt steadied the ship on the mound, the Matadors were unable to breakthrough against Pepperdine starter Dane Morrow. In the second, CSUN picked up back-to-back hits from Doremus and Ghan-Gibson before Morrow induced an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play. Two innings later, Morrow picked up another timely double play after consecutive singles from Austin Elder and Skelly. Morrow would finish strong, however, retiring 10 of the last 11 batters he faced.
After Pepperdine added a run in the sixth, the Matadors would trail 9-0 until the ninth inning when the offense finally came alive. The first two Matadors reached base to start the frame leading to an RBI single from Damiano Palmegiani that scored Mitch Kerner. Two batters later, Doremus rifled a single through the right side, plating a second run. Ghan-Gibson followed with a three-run shot over the left field wall, bringing CSUN within 9-5.
Andrew Lucas would also reach in the ninth on a hit by pitch with two outs but Denzel Clarke grounded out to end the game.
GAME NOTES
Along with Angebrandt, junior left hander Michael Cartwright made his Matador debut on the mound. Cartwright worked 1.1 shutout innings and struck out a batter. Senior Theron Kay also was effective on the bump, tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Palmegiani's RBI was his first of his Matador career. Ghan-Gibson has now hit safely in five-straight games.
