Matadors Sweep Santa Clara with 7-2 Win
3/24/2019 4:29:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (12-13) completed the series sweep of Santa Clara with a 7-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Matador Field. Five different Matadors posted two-hit games including sophomore Victor Cerny who went 2-for-2 with a home run and a double. Senior left hander Isaiah Nunez worked 7.0 quality innings, allowing a run on four hits with four strikeouts to improve to 4-2 on the year.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"Today [Isaiah] was up 0-2 against everybody. I haven't seen an outing in a long time with that many 0-2 counts. I give him a lot of credit just for pounding the zone with his best stuff.
I have a lot of confidence in this pitching staff. We throw a lot of strikes and we do a good job of holding runners. We do the small things well. I look at it as what do we need to do to get better at. Each guy has their own plan and goal. This week, we're going to work at what we need to get better at. I like this staff, their steadiness is very good."
GAME BREAKDOWN
After being blanked in the first inning, the Matador offense would score in four-straight innings to jump all over the Broncos. Cerny got the Matadors started off quickly with a solo home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the second.
An inning later, the Matadors pushed across an unearned run to double their lead. Robert Bullard and Brandon Bohning collected singles to kick off the frame before Kyle Barret reached on a fielder's choice. On the Barret grounder, Connor Henriques stepped on third base for the first out but threw wildy into right center field while trying to throw out Bohning at second base. After both runners moved up to second and third base on the play, Sean Skelly hit a sacrifice fly.
The Matadors would tack on two more runs in the fourth inning to lead 4-0. Cerny hit a leadoff double and later scored when Denzel Clarke ripped a triple off the right field wall. Bullard collected another two-out hit with an opposite field double down the left field line.
CSUN stretched its lead even further to 7-0 in the fifth inning. Four hits in the inning, capped off by a two-run single from Andrew Lucas gave Nunez all the run support we would need on the day.
Nunez retired 10 of the first 11 batters of the game before a Matador error put a runner on base with one out in the top of the fourth. The left hander eventually minimized the running game by teaming up to throw out Ryan McCarthy trying to steal second base.
Nunez continued to cruise with a shutout fourth and fifth before giving up a two-out solo home run to Jason Dicochea in the sixth. After tossing his third 1-2-3 inning in the seventh, Nunez would come back out for the top of the eighth where he gave up a leadoff hit to Henriques and his first walk of the day to Tony Boetto.
Head coach Greg Moore pulled Nunez from the game with a 1-2 count against Blake Faddoul. Blaine Traxel entered from the bullpen and immediately induced a flyout to left field. A fielder choice would put runners at the corners with one out before Traxel retired Dicochea on a flyout to left. Joey Cooper made a strong running catch in left center to record the final out.
The Broncos would trim the CSUN lead to 7-2 on a sacrifice fly from Matt Jew in the top of the ninth but it was not enough as Blake Sodersten shut the door for a Matador victory.
GAME NOTES
Clarke finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Bullard finished 2-for-4. At the top of the order, Bohning and Barret each posted 2-for-5 days to notch their team-best 11th multiple-hit games of the season. Wesley Ghan-Gibson stretched his on-base streak to eight-straight games with a walk.
Five of Nunez's six starts have been quality outings this season.
