NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball wrapped up its homestand with an 11-9 victory over St. John's on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Jayson Newman collected two hits and two RBI while sophomore Brandon Bohning hit his fourth home run of the season and drove in two runs while junior Robert Bullard scored three times and went 2-for-3. Seven Matadors had at least one hit while eight scored at least one run in a game that took just under four hours to complete.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"We played good baseball last week, I didn't think today it was very clean. We missed a few signs and we didn't execute on the mound. We're a better team than this and we have to play better. I thought we played good defense, that was the bright spot of today's win."
"Robert [Bullard] is the catalyst of our team. It's not just that he's productive at the top of our lineup, it's that he gets better as the game goes on. Very few players have the knack to see the game and slow the game down as they get into the seventh, eighth and ninth; he's very good at that."
GAME BREAKDOWN
CSUN struck first in the third inning after Bullard singled with two outs and Bohning stroked a home run to left field to put the Matadors ahead 2-0.
Blake Sodersten kept the Red Storm off the run column through the first three innings, limiting the opposition to three hits over that span. In the fourth, St. John's though cut the Matador lead in half on a sacrifice fly from Wyatt Mascarella. Sodersten would escape further trouble when he retired Collin Wetterau. The freshman finished his day, allowing just the one run on four hits in four innings of work.
Collecting nine hits in the game, the Matadors scored runs in six of eight frames on the day. In the fourth, the Matadors capitalized on two St. John's errors, which led to RBI singles from Sean Skelly and Jose Ruiz to build a 4-1 lead.
The Red Storm though fought back throughout the day, scoring twice in the fifth inning to pull within 4-3. CSUN added two runs in the fifth on a two-out, two-run single from Newman but St. John's got the runs back on a Wetterau RBI single and a Peter Abinati bases-loaded walk. Jackson Cunningham would escape a bases-loaded jam in sixth when he retired Josh Greene.
The Matadors stretched their lead to 9-5 in the home half of the sixth. CSUN stole three bases in the frame including Jose Ruiz and Denzel Clarke who both scored on an RBI triple from Andrew Lucas. Lucas would later score on a wild pitch.
St. John's answered again in the seventh with three more runs to pull within 9-8 on a three-run blast from Mascarella.
CSUN pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh and one more in the eighth on an RBI single from Austin Elder to take an 11-8 lead to the ninth.
Cassius Hamm gave the Matadors much needed relief out of the bullpen with a shutout 1.1 innings. Blake Schriever entered out of the 'pen with one out in the ninth and gave up an RBI single to Wetterau but he retired Rudy Aguilar on a fielder's choice to end the game.
GAME NOTES
CSUN stole seven bases in 10 chances in the game led by Bullard with two. Bohning, Elder, Clarke, Ruiz and Kyle Barret also recorded stolen bases in the win.
Newman extended his on-base streak to 11-straight games and hitting streak to eight.
Hamm earned the win, his first of the season, while Schriever nailed down his fourth save.
