The Matadors had their three-game winning streak snapped at the hands of UC Santa Barbara on Senior Night on Thursday by the final of 76-74. CSUN led 74-73 in the final seconds of the game before UCSB's Max Heidegger made a 3-pointer to put the Gauchos ahead by two. Freshman Darius Brown II's last shot near halfcourt came up short, giving UCSB the victory.
Freshman Lamine Diane collected his 18th double-double, tying the school's Division I single-season record. Diane would finish with 34 points and 13 rebounds while sophomore Terrell Gomez added 21 points and five 3-pointers from 3-point range. The game represented the final home game for the Matador senior class of Blair Orr and Cameron Gottfried. After suffering an injury on Jan. 5, Orr made his return to the court and played four minutes while Gottfried grabbed six rebounds and scored two points in 30 minutes of action.
Heading into the final day of the regular season, the Matadors are tied for sixth in the standings with UC Davis at 7-8. CSUN can finish anywhere between fourth and seventh in the league, however because of tiebreakers can only get as high as a fifth seed for the Big West Tournament. UC Riverside (3-12) is a full game ahead of Cal Poly (2-13) for the eighth spot. CSUN will play either Cal State Fullerton, UC Santa Barbara or Hawai'i in the first round of the Big West Tournament, which begins Thursday, March 14 at the Honda Center.
Diane can break yet another Matador record on Saturday night. Already the school's single-season points (736), field goals made (308) and blocks leader (65) in team history, Diane can break the CSUN record for rebounds in a season, which was set by Paul McCracken in 1970-71, with five more boards. On the Big West's all-time season leaderboard, Diane is 10th in scoring and can pass Lucious Harris (Long Beach State) with four more points and Kevin Magee (UC Irvine) with eight points.
In the Big West, the Matadors remain in first in points per game (76.6), field goals made per game (28.5), field goal percentage (46.6), steals per game (6.4) and blocks per game (4.5). Gomez is second in the conference in points per game (19.7) and free throw percentage (88.0).
