Matadors Open Up Road Trip at Long Beach State

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (15-17, 3-3 BWC) opens a seven-game road trip this weekend as the Matadors visit Long Beach State for a three-game series. The opener is set for Friday at 6 p.m. while the series continues Saturday at 6 p.m. and concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games will stream live on BigWest.TV.
CSUN's seven-game trip includes Big West showdowns with Long Beach State and UC Irvine (April 18-20). The Matadors conclude the trip with a midweek non-conference game against California Baptist on April 23.

After an 0-3 first week to Big West play, the Matadors bounced back in a big way last weekend with a three-game sweep of UC Riverside. CSUN outscored the Highlanders 50-12, tying a school record for runs in a Big West series. The Matadors totaled 44 hits, racking up 16 extra base hits. CSUN also collected 26 walks and was a perfect 10-for-10 in stolen bases, highlighted by Brandon Bohning's steal of home plate in game three. The Matadors also slugged .690 at the plate and posted a .520 on-base percentage.
The Matadors handed UCR a 14-5 defeat in a game one, led by senior Kyle Barret's 4-for-4 day and junior Sean Skelly's two homers and five RBI. In game two, CSUN set a new school record for runs in a Big West Conference game in a 25-1 rout as senior Isaiah Nunez worked six quality innings and freshman Andrew Lucas racked up four hits and six RBI. CSUN completed the sweep in game three with an 11-6 win last Sunday with sophomore Victor Cerny leading the way with four RBI.
Sophomore left hander Wesley Moore will make his third-straight Friday start this weekend when he takes the hill against Long Beach State. Moore is 4-2 with a 2.76 ERA and a team-high 43 strikeouts (seventh in Big West) over 49.0 innings (third in Big West). Nunez improved to 5-3 last week and will come into his Saturday start with a 3.17 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 48.1 innings of work. Rounding out the rotation, freshman Blake Sodersten (1-2) earned his first collegiate win last Sunday. Sodersten sports a 4.41 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 32.2 innings over nine appearances.
Barret leads the squad in batting (.347), hits (42), doubles (12), walks (18) slugging (.554) and on-base percentage (.451). Skelly's two homers last week pushed his season total to four to go with a .288 batting average, 12 runs scored and 14 RBI. Junior Jose Ruiz improved his batting average to .282 after five hits last weekend while he has driven in 13 runs and scored 12 times this season. Also on a hot streak, Lucas has hit in 10-straight games to increase his batting average to .282 with 19 RBI, 18 runs scored, 13 walks and three homers. Lucas has hit .457 during his hitting streak with 10 RBI.
The Dirtbags leads the all-time series with the Matadors 80-64-1 and have won the last eight series. CSUN's last series win over LBSU took place in 2010 when the Matadors swept a series at home. The Matadors though are seeking their first series win in Long Beach since 2001 as CSUN won two of three that season. Since winning the road series in 2001, the Matadors have lost eight-straight series at Blair Field and dropped 15 of 17 series overall. Last season, CSUN lost of two of three at Matador Field with the Dirtbags winning the rubber game 3-2.
A Closer Look at Long Beach State
The Dirtbags come in with a 5-26 record and 0-3 mark in Big West play. LBSU suffered a three-game sweep at the hands of nationally-ranked UC Irvine last weekend before bouncing back with a 5-4 win at San Diego. Long Beach State has played 15 games against ranked teams, posting a 3-12 record. LBSU is 18th in the nation in sacrifice hits (25) while the team is batting .221.
Junior Jacob Hughey leads the team in hits (28), doubles (10) and RBI (15) to go with a .304 average at the plate. In 55 at bats, senior Laine Huffman is batting .309 (17-for-55) while junior Victor Carlino is posting a .318 batting average (7-for-22). Senior Brooks Stotler is tops on the team in runs scored (17) while he has 16 walks and four RBI. Sophomore left hander Adam Seminaris (2-5) will make the Friday start as he comes in with a 3.80 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 47.1 innings. Junior right hander Nick Avila (0-0, 4.71 ERA, 14 strikeouts) and junior left hander Zak Baayoun (1-6, 4.93 ERA, 26 strikeouts) round out the Dirtbag rotation.
