GAME BREAKDOWN
CSUN struck first in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Victor Cerny led off the inning by reaching on a Calvin Estrada error who overran a fly ball near the right field line. After Andrew Lucas reached on a perfectly placed bunt single, he stole second base to put two runners in scoring position. LBSU starter Adam Seminaris would retire the next two batters before Bohning came through with a single up the middle that plated both runners.
Â
CSUN got back into the scoring column in the fifth inning on one swing of the bat. Skelly would belt a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall, giving CSUN a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning.
Â
Sophomore left hander Wesley Moore shut out the Dirtbags through the first four innings, stranding two base runners over that span. Seemingly in control, Moore would run into trouble in the fifth as Matador miscues led to the Dirtbags plating four runs. The first two batters reached to start the inning before a throwing error at third base on a Tyler Porter bunt led to the first Dirtbag run scoring.
Â
Kaden Hogan followed with another bunt, which Moore fielded and fired to first base. However, Ghan-Gibson intercepted the throw that was intended for Kyle Barret who was covering the first base bag. The Dirtbags scored their second run on the play and added two more on a two-out single from Jacob Hughey. Blaine Traxel finally stopped the bleeding with a strikeout of Cole Joy, leaving two runners on base.
Â
The Matador bullpen held the Dirtbags at bay over the next three innings led by Traxel who tossed two shutout innings and struck out four batters. Cruz Daddario retired four of the five batters he faced to keep the Matadors within a run heading to the ninth inning.
Â
Battling to their last outs, the Matadors broke through in the top of the ninth. Barret legged out a single to start the frame and later reached second base on a wild pitch. Skelly would bunt Barret over to third before pinch hitter Angelo Bortolin hit an RBI groundout to even the game at 4-4.
Â
Ruiz stepped to the plate next and singled to left center. The Matador third baseman eventually stole second base on a close play before Austin Elder followed with an RBI single up the middle to give CSUN a 5-4 lead.
Â
CSUN closer Blake Schriever entered out of the bullpen looking to shut the door but the Dirtbags had other ideas. Chase Luttrell singled and later scored on a one-out RBI double from Brooks Stotler to even the game once more. Three batters later, Dominic Campeau stroked a single down the right field line to plate Stotler, winning the game for Long Beach State.
Â
