CSUN Evens Series with Long Beach State with 3-2 Win

LONG BEACH, Calif.---CSUN Baseball's (16-18, 4-4 BWC) early runs held up in a 3-2 win over Long Beach State on Saturday at Blair Field. Senior Isaiah Nunez improved to 6-3 on the season after working 5.2 innings and allowing two runs while freshman Blaine Traxel tossed 3.1 shutout innings to nail down the save. Freshman Denzel Clarke drove in two of the Matadors' three runs to help CSUN even its series with the Dirtbags.
GAME BREAKDOWN
CSUN would break up a 0-0 game in the top of the second inning, plating all three of its runs on the night. Sean Skelly began the inning with a single then Andrew Lucas and Wesley Ghan-Gibson hit back-to-back one-out singles to load the bases. Looking to put the ball in the play and away from the middle of the infield, Angelo Bortolin pulled the ball to the right side, giving Skelly an opportunity to race home with the game's first run. Clarke followed next and rifled a 1-1 pitch up the middle to plate Lucas and Ghan-Gibson and give the Matadors a 3-0 edge.
Pitching with the lead, Nunez would toss 1-2-3 innings twice on the night as he scattered nine hits over his 5.2 innings of work.
The Dirtbags would load the bases in the bottom of the second inning with just one out before Nunez retired Dominic Campeau on a flyout to right. Lucas made the catch in shallow right field and threw out Aidan Malm at home plate to end the inning.
In the third, Long Beach State had two runners on with two outs but Nunez fanned Jacob Hughey, ending the inning. The Dirtbags also picked up a two-out double from Laine Huffman before Nunez sat down Brooks Stotler with another strikeout.
Nunez though ran into trouble in the sixth when the first two Dirtbags reached base on singles. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base before Tyler Porter came through with a two-run single. Nunez retired the next batter but gave up a two-out single to Campeau, forcing a move to the bullpen.
Traxel would provide the Matadors with a lift out of the bullpen as he escaped the jam in the sixth and go on to blank the Dirtbags the rest of the way. The right hander left a runner stranded at second base in the seventh and a runner at first base in the bottom of the eighth.
Still ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth, CSUN sent Traxel back to the mound looking for the save. The freshman retired Victor Carlino on a groundout then Huffman on a popup before giving up a two-out single to Stotler. Traxel though ended the game on the very next pitch as Calvin Estrada popped up to Traxel for the third out.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"Isaiah set the tone tonight by getting ahead of hitters. Blaine finished. We have a few guys playing injured. I'm proud of their effort."
GAME NOTES
Traxel's save on Saturday is his first of his career. Seven of the Matadors' nine saves this season have been multiple-inning efforts.
Finishing 1-for-4 with a run scored, Lucas extended his on-base streak to 14-straight games and his hitting streak to 12 in a row. Jose Ruiz also stretched his on-base streak to 12 after a 1-for-4 effort.
UP NEXT
The Matadors and Dirtbags will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The game will stream live on BigWest.TV.
