No. 23 CSUN Falls to UC Davis in Regular Season Finale, 11-8

DAVIS, Calif.---No. 23 CSUN (14-17, 0-5 BWC) fell 11-8 to No. 9 UC Davis (17-10, 3-2 BWC) in a close bout on the Aggies' Senior Day Saturday afternoon. In its final regular season match of the campaign, CSUN was led by junior Jennalyn Barthels and sophomore Sara Dempsey, as they combined to score five of the eight goals in the defeat. Tori Wilson led the team defensively as she tallied two steals in the match.
GAME BREAKDOWN
UC Davis came out of the gates swinging as the No.9 Aggies tallied five goals in the opening quarter in front of the home fans. UC Davis scored five unanswered to begin the scoring with the first two goals coming from seniors McKenna Hauss and Annie Kutt on Senior Day.
Barthels scored CSUN's first goal on a power play with a little over a minute left to go in the quarter to cut the lead to four entering the second. Katia Andon-Mateos would tally her 28th assist of the season on the play.
In the second quarter, CSUN would cut the lead in half to kick things off. A power play goal by Wilson from Barthels, and an even strength shot by Andon-Mateos from Dempsey put the score at 5-3 in favor of the Aggies. Wilson finishes the regular season leading the team in goals at 61.
The Aggies would get their fourth goal lead back as consecutive goals by Marcela Portales put UC Davis on top 7-3 heading into halftime.
CSUN's defense would be the story in the third quarter, as the Matadors held the Aggies to only one goal while scoring two of their own. Ashlee Sellung scored from Andon-Mateos to make it 7-4. UC Davis would then follow with its only goal of the quarter when Hauss tallied the final regular season goal of her career.
A penalty shot from Barthels brought the lead to three heading into the fourth.
In the fourth both teams went shot for shot with no team gaining the clear advantage. A power play goal by Dempsey brought the lead to two for the first time since the second, but a power play goal from UC Davis' Kathleen Schafle made the score 9-6 with four minutes left to play.
After a penalty shot from the Aggies made it a four goal lead again, CSUN would not lie down as the Matadors followed with two goals of their own. Multiple power play goals, the first by Andon-Mateos and the second one from Barthels cut the lead in half yet again, this time to 10-8. Kutt would score the final goal of the match and her regular season career to end the game at 11-8.
