#21 UC Irvine Edges CSUN 2-0 in Series Finale
4/20/2019 4:21:00 PM | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif.---In a game dominated by pitching, CSUN Baseball (16-22, 4-8 BWC) suffered a 2-0 defeat to No. 21 UC Irvine (25-9, 8-4 BWC) on Saturday afternoon at Anteater Ballpark. Freshman right hander Blake Sodersten tossed 4.2 shutout innings, striking out four batters while allowing just two hits. Junior Robert Bullard reached base twice and collected a double on the offensive side.
UCI broke up a scoreless game in the sixth inning and added another run in the seventh to edge the Matadors and complete a three-game sweep.
GAME BREAKDOWN
Sodersten got off to a strong start against the Anteaters, retiring the first nine batters of the game. The freshman would not allow a hit until Mike Peabody began the fourth with a double. Sodersten though rebounded well by retiring the next three Anteaters, stranding Peabody at third base.
On the flip side, the Matadors were unable to get much going against UCI starter Trenton Denholm. CSUN would threaten in the first inning when Jose Ruiz was hit by a pitch and Kyle Barret doubled with one out. Denholm rallied to escape the first inning by sitting down the next two batters and he would go on to retire 12 of 13 batters.
Still a scoreless game in the top of the fifth, Bullard stroked a one-out double to left center field. However, Denholm again rallied to strike out Denzel Clarke and force Andrew Lucas to ground out.
Sodersten cruised into the fifth inning before running into trouble. Konnor Zickefoose singled with one out then Matt Reitano worked a two-out walk forcing head coach Greg Moore to make a move to the bullpen. Blaine Traxel was called upon to put out the fire and did so by forcing Sam Ireland to ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
CSUN nearly took the lead in the sixth inning when Jose Ruiz singled and reached second base on a failed pickoff attempt. Ruiz eventually advanced to third base with two outs before Denholm retired Brandon Bohning for the third out.
The Anteaters finally came away with the game's first run in the sixth. After Traxel hit Peabody on the first pitch of the inning, Brandon Lewis singled to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Moments later, Adrian Damla hit a sacrifice fly to plate the speedy Peabody to give UCI a 1-0 lead. UCI would be held off the scoreboard the rest of the frame as the combination of Michael Cartwright and Cruz Daddario recorded the final two outs of the inning.
Denholm returned back to the mound in the seventh but gave up a leadoff walk to Austin Elder. Josh Cerpa executed a sacrifice bunt to move the possible tying run to second base. Things though quickly turned around when Denholm picked off Elder for the second out of the inning. Bullard would work a two-out walk before reliever Taylor Rashi struck out pinch hitter Blake Doremus.
UCI added a big insurance run in the eighth on a two-out RBI single from Ireland to put the Matadors in a 2-0 hole.
A comeback would not be in the cards for the Matadors as Rashi retired the final six batters in a row to seal the win for the Anteaters.
GAME NOTES
Lucas and Barret each went 1-for-4 in the game as both hitters have reached base safely in 11 of 12 Big West contests. Out of the bullpen, Blake Schriever worked a clean bottom of the eighth, striking out a batter while Theron Kay retired two batters in the seventh inning.
For UCI, Denholm tossed 6.2 shutout innings to improve to 7-1 on the sason. Zickefoose had two of his team's five hits.
