CSUN broke open a one-run game late by scoring five times over the last two innings to seal a win at UC Davis for a second-straight day.

GAME BREAKDOWN
The Aggies would jump out to the early lead against Sodersten in the first inning. Back-to-back one-out singles from the Aggies put runners at the corners. Sodersten retired Spencer Gedestad on a sacrifice fly that gave UC Davis a 1-0 lead. The freshman right hander prevented any further damage by retiring Cameron Briggs two batters later.
Â
The first six Matadors were retired by Aggie starter Jake Spillane before the offense came alive in the third inning. Palmegiani and Cerpa singled to start the inning then Clarke moved both runners up a base on a sacrifice bunt. Barret followed with a two-run single up the middle to give the Matadors a 2-1 lead.
Â
CSUN added to its lead in the fifth inning thanks to a pair of extra base hits. Barret kicked off the frame with a double down the left field line. Two batters later, Sean Skelly rifled a double into left-center field to plate Barret for CSUN's third run of the day.
Sodersten bounced back after the first inning to shut out the Aggies over the next four frames. The right hander faced the minimum over the span and received timely defense behind him to keep the Aggies off the scoreboard. In the third, Morrison reached on an infield single but he would be caught stealing by Skelly. Two innings later, Logan Denholm singled with one out before he was erased on a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Jalen Smith.
In the sixth, the Aggies picked up back-to-back singles against Sodersten before Caleb Van Blake was retired on a flyout. With runners at the corners and one out, head coach Greg Moore turned to Blaine Traxel to put out the fire. Traxel, who worked 2.1 shutout innings on Friday, was strong again on Saturday. The freshman retired Gedestad on a groundball for the second out, which brought in a run. After Gedestad stole second base, Traxel fanned Alejandro Lara to keep CSUN up 3-2.
Traxel retired the side in order in the seventh inning before the Matador bats came alive in the late innings. In the eighth, Clarke delivered a one-out double that plated Brandon Bohning and Cerpa to extend the CSUN lead to 5-2.
An inning later, the Matadors capitalized on two Aggie errors to add three more insurance runs. Both Skelly and Robert Bullard worked walks to kick off the inning before an Aggie error off the bat of Andrew Lucas loaded the bases with nobody out. Bohning picked up a sacrifice fly to bring home Skelly then Wesley Ghan-Gibson was hit by a pitch to load the bases again. Cerpa brought in a run on a fielder's choice and created an opportunity for another Matador run moments later. With Lucas at third base, Cerpa stole second base but an errant throw from Denholm at home plate gave Lucas a chance to score, making it an 8-2 game.
Traxel surrendered a leadoff hit in the eighth inning but went on to retire the final six batters in a row to nail down his second save of the season.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"The bottom three in our lineup drove the offense today. Eight times in 12 at bats they were on base. Each had big hits to start a rally or drive in runs.
Blake Sodersten was without his fastball away today. He used the inner part of the plate effectively and kept his pitch count down. Through five, he threw 50 pitches. Blaine Traxel bounced back to pitch well again today. He's so durable. It's like having two pitchers in the 'pen."
GAME NOTES
Barret notched his team-best 19th multiple-hit game of the season while he tied Bohning for the team lead in multiple-RBI games with eight. The senior second baseman has also hit safely in 10-straight games. Traxel worked 3.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen, striking out five batters while allowing one hit.
The series win for the Matadors is the team's second ever at UC Davis and first for the team since sweeping a series in 2013.
UP NEXT
The Matadors go for the series sweep of UC Davis on Sunday afternoon. First pitch for the series finale is set for 1 p.m.
