Matadors Fall Twice at San Francisco
5/19/2019 6:38:00 PM | Baseball
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (22-30) dropped two games to San Francisco on Sunday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond. The Dons took the opener of the doubleheader 6-3 in a scheduled seven-inning game and held on for a 6-2 win in game two to clinch the series win. Senior Wesley Ghan-Gibson homered for the sixth time his season while freshman Blaine Traxel pitched a season-high 5.2 innings in game one. In game two, junior Blake Doremus drove in a run and the Matador bullpen worked 7.0 innings, allowing a run.
Â
The Matadors would be held to four hits in each game of the doubleheader as the Dons' offense scored early runs to take control of both contests. Â
Â
GAME ONE RECAP
The Matadors threatened to break the game open early in the first inning. Kyle Barret kicked off the game with a double off the right-center wall before Jose Ruiz and Sean Skelly worked walks to load the bases with nobody out. After USF starter Scott Parker struck out Andrew Lucas, Damiano Palmegiani hit a hard groundball on the line at third base but RJ Cordeiro was positioned perfectly to step on the bag and complete a 5-3 double play. Â
Â
Riding the momentum of the top of the first, USF took advantage of a bases loaded nobody out situation to plate four runs. Blake Sodersten battled two different batters to nine-pitch at bats and a third to a 12-pitch at bat but all three reached base. Riley Helland collected an RBI double to put USF on the scoreboard before Robert Emery drove in two more on a double. USF added a fourth run on a sacrifice fly from Jacob Westerman to take a 4-0 lead.
Â
Traxel, who retired the final two batters in the first, gave the Matadors much needed pitching relief. The right hander scattered six hits and tied a season high with five strikeouts. The only blemish came in the fifth when Emery hit a two-run home run.
Â
On the flip side, Parker cooled off the Matador bats over six innings of work. After the first inning, Parker allowed just two walks as he retired 12 consecutive batters at one point.
Â
CSUN's offense finally came alive in the seventh inning. Palmegiani picked up the Matadors' first hit since the first inning with a leadoff double. Moments later, Ghan-Gibson blasted a two-run shot to left center, cutting the lead to 6-2 and knocking Parker out of the game.
Â
Reliever Joey Steele entered the fray for USF and retired the next two batters before Barret reached on a fielding error, scoring Bullard from third base. Ruiz nearly kept the game going with a drive that bounced up the middle but shortstop Jack Winkler corralled the grounder and threw out Ruiz to end the game.
Â
GAME TWO RECAP
In similar fashion to game one, the Matadors would leave two batters on base in the first inning. The Dons took advantage and plated the game's first run in the bottom of the first. With runners at second and third base, Jonathan Allen grounded out to put USF ahead 1-0.
Â
In the second, the Dons batted around in a five-run frame to push the lead to six. USF loaded the bases with nobody out before Jason Kreske hit a two-run double. Tyler Villaroman followed with a two-run double of his own before Allen capped off the frame with another RBI double.
Â
From there on, the Matador bullpen would keep the Dons at bay. Working his way through the second inning, Cruz Daddario retired seven-straight batters over three-plus innings of work. Blake Schriever came on in the fifth inning with one on and one out and proceeded to sit down all 11 batters he faced in the ball game over 3.2 innings.
Â
CSUN cut the Dons' deficit to 6-2 in the third inning behind two hits. Ruiz doubled to begin the inning with a double and would later score on a Doremus RBI single. A second run scored in the inning on a Lucas double play.
Â
After the third, the Matador offense produced just one hit, a Brandon Bohning one-out double in the fourth. The USF trio of Josh Mollerus, Alex Pham and Steele combine to retire the final 16 Matador batters to conclude the game.
Â
GAME NOTES
Pitching in his 30th game of the season, Traxel is now tied with Matt Gaylord (2005), Jimmy Brettl (2006) and Phil Polanco (2004) for the fourth-most appearances in a single season in CSUN history. Sean Skelly drew a walk in each game of the doubleheader to extend his on-base streak to 12-straight games. As a group, the relief trio of Traxel, Schriever and Daddario allowed just three runs in 18.1 innings in the series (1.47 ERA).
