CSUN Opens Men's Soccer Season At Ohio State Classic

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The 42nd season of CSUN men's soccer begins this weekend when the Matadors enter the Ohio State Bert & Iris Wolstein Classic.
CSUN begins the tournament Friday night when the Matadors face the host Buckeyes at 4 p.m. PDT. The game will be streamed on BigTenPlus.com for a fee.
The Buckeyes are coming off a 1-15-2 season in which OSU finished 10th in the Big 10. Jake Scheper is the top returning scorer for the Buckeyes. He posted three goals and two assists for a total of seven points a year ago. This is the first time that CSUN and Ohio State are playing men's soccer.
The tournament concludes Sunday when CSUN faces Dayton at 9 a.m. PDT. The Flyers went 9-6-4 in 2018, 4-3-1 in the Atlantic 10. Dayton was picked fourth in the preseason A-10 Men's Soccer Poll.
Senior goalkeeper Federico Barrios selected to the preseason A-10 All-Conference team. A junior, Barrios started all 18 matches for Dayton last season. He made 57 saves and recorded eight shutouts. This is the second time that CSUN and Dayton are playing. The teams played to a 2-2 tie during the 1990 Evansville Tournament.
Live stats will be available for both matches on GoMatadors.com. CSUN holds an all-time record of 26-13-2 in its season openers.
Daniel Trejo and Giovanni Aguilar were selected preseason All-Conference while CSUN was picked third in the preseason Big West Conference men's soccer poll Thursday.
Trejo is the top returning scorer in the Big West Conference with 17 career goals and 42 career points. The junior from Mendota was named first-team All-Conference and second-team All-Conference last season. Aguilar, a junior, is a two-time returning honorable mention All-Conference selection. He anchors the Matadors' midfield.
UC Santa Barbara received three first-place votes to earn first (53) in the coaches' poll. UC Irvine with 51 points and two first-place votes is second followed by CSUN with 45 points. UC Davis (39), Cal State Fullerton (36), UC Riverside (34), Cal Poly (17), and Sacramento State (13) round out the poll.
The Matadors went 1-0-2 during the exhibition portion of the 2019 season. CSUN opened men's soccer exhibition play by defeating CSU Bakersfield 2-1 Aug. 18.
The teams agreed to a format of three 30-minute periods for the match. The Matadors struck quickly as Johnny Rodriguez got CSUN on the board 1:20 into the first before. Ehi Isibor recorded the Matadors' second goal at the 6:50 mark. Trejo was credited with the assist on Isibor's tally.
CSUN would end the first with a 2-0 advantage. The match settled in with the Matadors maintaining the two-goal lead throughout the second period. The Roadrunners cut the Matadors' lead in half when Ricardo Soza scored with 5:06 remaining in the match.
CSUN and Cal State L.A. played to a 1-1 tie in the second Matador men's soccer match Aug. 21. The Matadors took the lead in the 25th minute. Omar Grey sent a crossing pass from left to right to Brendan Hildreth. Hildreth took possession and sent a cross into the box where Johnny Rodriguez headed the ball for a 1-0 CSUN lead.
The Golden Eagles tied the match at the 66:26 mark when Tim Klefisch took advantage of a Matadors' turnover in front of the CSUN net and scored from five yards out. The Matadors pressed earning back-to-back corner kicks in the 74th and 76th minutes. Two more corners came in the 79th. On the second of the possession, Grey's header went just high.
Ethan Bethan's strike from the 18-yard mark, with just under three to go, was saved by Sebastian Castellanos and proved to be the final attempt of the match. The teams agreed to two 45-minute periods and did not play overtime.
CSUN and California Baptist played to 1-1 tie in the final Matador men's soccer exhibition Aug. 24.

The Lancers tied the match in the 77th minute when George Ionascu scored. Nicklas Haakenstad was credited with the assist on the play. The final two scoring chances of the second half came from CBU in the final 10 minutes. One-shot was blocked by the CSUN defense, the other going high.
