Matadors Kick-Off Cross Country Campaign With Solid Performance in San Diego

NORTHRIDGE, Calif - The CSUN women's cross country team finished fifth in the 6k race while the men were fourth in the 8k race Friday at the USD Invite hosted by the University of San Diego.
Alyssa Segovia paced the Matadors for the first race this year with her time of 25:03.5 which was 36th. Segovia approached her personal best time in a 6k (24:47.0) set at the 2018 Big West Championships. Following Segovia's lead was junior Heidi Eligio. Eligio finished 39th with a time of 25:19.3 while averaging a mile time of 6:47 during the race.
The next three finishers for the women's side include the sophomore trio of Joy Bosede (52nd, 26:39.8), Elizabeth Silengo (54th, 27:23.6) and Alyssa DeStasio (55th, 27:24.6).
On the men's side, Noah Contreras, a freshman competing in his first collegiate meet, paced the Matadors to begin the season with a 34th place finish (28:52.0). Following the Contreras train was another freshman, James Moore, who finished 38th with a time of 29:39.3. Sophomore Daniel Fendrich followed right behind them with a 39th place finish (31:06.1).
"The group put forth a good effort," said head coach Justin Johnson. "We have work to do in the next two weeks before we head to Santa Clarita and I look forward to seeing our improvements."
The next race for the Matadors will be in two weeks on Sept. 28 at the Masters University Invitational in Santa Clarita.
