• Sophomore setter Hannah Merjil also posted her seventh career double-double with 37 assists and 12 digs while senior Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker came off the bench to record 15 assists and three digs over the final two sets. SET 1
A co-block by Nevarez and Salone gave the Matadors an early four-point lead at 7-3. CSUN still led by three (12-9) following a Nevarez kill that forced a Viking timeout. Portland State scored three straight to tie the score. Three more ties ensued, the last at 15-15, when the Matadors claimed four of the next five points to force another Viking timeout at 20-16. CSUN led by as many as six points (23-17) after another Nevarez kill before claiming the opening set 25-19.
SET 2
The hosts evened the match after taking the second set 25-20. Neither team hit well in the set as Portland State hit .103 to CSUN's .036. After an early Viking hitting error gave the Matadors a 4-2 lead, the hosts claimed eight of the next nine points to open up a 10-5 lead. A Seyvion Waggoner kill pulled CSUN within 14-13 and the Matadors were also within one at 15-14 following a Salone kill. Portland State then rallied behind a 4-1 run to open up a 19-15 lead. CSUN would get within two at 20-18 but could pull no closer.
SET 3
The Vikings carried the momentum into the third set, jumping out to a 5-2 lead. Portland State led by as many as four (9-5) when the Matadors engineered a 4-0 run to cut the lead to one. The Vikings built their lead back to three at 18-15 and still led 19-16 following a CSUN timeout. A 3-0 Matador run, capped by a McLeod kill, forced a Portland State timeout before a McLeod/Salone co-block followed by a Viking hitting error gave CSUN its first lead of the set at 21-20. After a Bradford service error evened the score, the Matadors claimed the final four points in a 25-21 win.
SET 4
Portland State scored the first four points and would never trail in the set. Still leading by four at 9-5, another Viking point forced a Matador timeout. Portland State continued to pull away however as the hosts used a 4-2 run to open up a 14-7 cushion. The Viking lead swelled to as many as nine points before a late CSUN rally trimmed the final margin to six at 25-19.
SET 5
After the Vikings claimed the first three points of the final set, a Warnock solo block ignited a 10-0 run by the Matadors. McLeod and Orshoff each had three kills during the run as CSUN extended the lead to 10-3. Out of a Portland State timeout, the Vikings scored twice before Orshoff put down consecutive kills giving the Matadors a seemingly comfortable 12-5 cushion. But a 5-0 run by the hosts trimmed the lead to 12-10 before a Viking service error ended the run. Salone's kill set CSUN up with match point at 14-11 and after Portland State saved one match point, Nevarez connected to end the match.
