FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (6-1-3) returns to the friendly confines of Matador Soccer Field for its final non-conference games this week. The Matadors host Pepperdine on Thursday at 7 p.m. and take on Denver on Sunday at 1 p.m. Thursday's match will stream live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health via Big West.TV.
CSUN received votes for the second-straight week on the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll released on Tuesday. The Matadors received seven points, which is up from the three they received last week. On the west region Top 10 poll, the Matadors are up to third place.
The Matadors went 1-0-1 last weekend in Arizona. CSUN played to a 1-1 draw with Arizona State on Friday night before defeating Grand Canyon 2-0 on Sunday. With the two results, the Matadors stretched their unbeaten streak to seven-straight matches including three consecutive on the road.
Playing the fifth-highest scoring offense in the nation, CSUN held the Sun Devils scoreless through nearly 75 minutes of action. Freshman Kacie Garrity scored her first career goal in the 49th minute to break a 0-0 tie. Eventually, ASU took advantage of a foul inside CSUN's box to tie the game on a penalty kick in the 75th minute. The Matadors' defense held firm the rest of the way as sophomore Amanda Delgado racked up five saves in the match.
CSUN would take control early against Grand Canyon, scoring in the second minute of play. Off a turnover, freshman Izabel Reyes corralled the loose ball and made a touch pass to junior Bethany Fitzsimmons who finished the play from eight yards out. The Matadors added an insurance goal in the 44th minute when freshman Stephanie Gallardo scored via a pass from sophomore Alexis White. Sophomore Taylor Thames made her return in goal and picked up four saves en route to her third shutout of the season.
After helping hold two opponents to a goal in 200 minutes of action, Garrity was rewarded with Big West Defensive Player of the Week accolades. Garrity is the third Matador to earn the conference's weekly defensive honor in five weeks this season. Both Matador goalkeepers have also earned the award with Thames receiving the nod on Aug. 26 and Delgado on Sept. 9.
The Matadors remain the Big West leaders in goals-against-average (0.66) and shutouts (6) this season while they share the conference lead with UC Riverside in goals allowed (7). CSUN is also ranked second in goals scored with 13. The goalkeeping tandem of Delgado and Thames are tied for first place in wins (3) and shutouts (3) while Delgado is ranked second in goals-against-average (0.84). In goals, White and Fitzsimmons are tied for fourth place with three goals. Freshman Cindy Arteaga is fourth in shots attempted with 22.
Pepperdine leads the all-time series with CSUN 8-1-3. The Matadors are looking to snap a two-match winless streak in the series and post their first win over the Waves since Sept. 2010 (2-1). The teams last played in 2016 at Matador Soccer Field which saw the game end in a scoreless draw. CSUN and Denver have faced off twice in women's soccer with the Pioneers posting a 1-0-1 advantage in the series. The teams though have not played one another since the 2000 season, which also resulted in a scoreless draw.
A Closer Look at Pepperdine
The Waves (3-4-2) competed against a pair of nationally-ranked teams at the Rainbow Wahine Shootout in Honolulu last weekend. Pepperdine played to a 2-2 draw with UCLA before falling to Washington State 2-1. As a team, the Waves are tied for second in the West Coast Conference in shutouts (4) and ranked third in goals-against-average (1.06). Head coach Tim Ward is in his 22nd season at the helm.
Four players share the team lead in goals with two this season while sophomore Leyla McFarland is tops in points (7) and assists (3). In goal, the duo of freshman Kinsey Ehmann and sophomore Zoe Clevely have allowed 10 combined goals on the year. Ehmann has seen the most time in goal, posting a 1.14 GAA with 25 saves.
A Closer Look at Denver
The Pioneers (3-4-1) played once last week, falling to Colorado 2-0 in Denver to run their losing skid to four-straight matches. Despite the losing streak, all four matches have been against winning teams including a Colorado team that climbed into the national rankings this week. In his 28th season at the helm, Jeff Hooker has led Denver to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons.
Senior Hannah Adler and sophomore Samantha Feller share the team lead in goals with two apiece with Adler holding the point lead at five. Senior Brittany Wilson has seen every minute in net and has registered four shutouts and a 0.72 GAA with only six goals allowed. Wilson's shutout total is tied for first in the Summit League while her GAA is ranked third.
