Early Goal Holds Up in CSUN's Loss to Pepperdine
9/26/2019 9:28:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN's Women's Soccer (6-2-3) suffered its first home loss of the season as Pepperdine prevailed 1-0 on Thursday evening at Matador Soccer Field. Sophomore Amanda Delgado collected four saves in goal. The loss snapped the Matadors' seven-match undefeated streak.
Pepperdine outshot CSUN 14-6 in the contest but held a narrow edge in shots on goal at 5-3. The Waves took four corner kicks compared to CSUN's three. A total of 22 fouls were called in the match with 13 issued to CSUN. Pepperdine's Isabel Nelson and Laura Ishikawa were shown yellow cards in the match.
FIRST HALF
Both teams traded early possessions until Pepperdine went on the attack in the fifth where Brie Welch nearly broke the scoreless tie. Delgado would make a sliding deflection at the right post to keep the Waves off the scoreboard for the moment. Minutes later, on a counterattack, Welch dribbled past midfield and found Leyla McFarland on the right corner of the post. McFarland delivered a cross to the left side where Devyn Gilfoy finished from eight yards out.
The Waves appeared to have doubled their lead in the 35th minute when Delgado saved a free kick from Isabel Nelson. The ball would bounce back into play and in front of the net where Olivia Packer kicked the ball inside the right post. However, an offside call wiped away the goal. Alexis White put a late shot on goal in the 39th minute but the score remained 1-0 heading into intermission.
SECOND HALF
The Matadors were aggressors out of the break, nearly resulting in the equalizer. In a close call, Sydney Gilbert set up Izabel Reyes on the right side for a look at the net from 18 yards. Reyes' shot was saved by goalkeeper Kinsey Ehmann but the ball trickled back into play. Before Bethany Fitzsimmons could get a touch on the ball from six yards away, a Pepperdine defender cleared the ball.
In the 75th minute, a free kick also resulted in another CSUN goal. Amanda Martin deposited a long free kick up the center of the field where a deflection sent the ball up the middle of the box. Amya LawsonKitchen was able to get a touch on the ball from inside eight yards but Ehmann broke up the play. In the 87th minute, Fitzsimmons would have her shot blocked leading to a CSUN corner kick. However, the Matadors were unable to come away with a shot on the set piece as Pepperdine held on in the final minutes.
GAME NOTES
Cindy Arteaga led the Matadors in the shot department with two while Reyes, White and LawsonKitchen all had shots on goal. On the backine, Amanda Martin, Amber Edemann and Kacie Garrity played the full 90 minutes.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH KEITH WEST
"I thought we started the first half well but I don't know if we finished the first half very well. In the second half, I thought we got back to who we are - we stuck to the game plan and the ball started bouncing our way. That's what happens when you work hard, you stay together and stay disciplined and organized."
UP NEXT
The Matadors complete non-conference play on Sunday afternoon with a home match with Denver. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
