Matadors Drop 1-0 Decision to Denver in Non-Conference Finale
9/29/2019 3:36:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (6-3-3) fell to Denver 1-0 in its non-conference finale on Sunday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. Sophomore Amanda Delgado racked up three saves on the day in between the pipes while freshman Stephanie Gallardo collected a team-high two shots.
The Pioneers outshot the Matadors 11-5 in the contest and posted a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. Denver would take six of the nine corner kicks in the match. A total of 15 fouls were called with Denver whistled for nine of them.
FIRST HALF
In the early minutes, Denver missed wide of the net twice while Delgado picked up her only save of the half in the seventh minute. Stephanie Gallardo came off the bench and picked up two quick shots including an attempt in the 31st minute that was saved by Nerea Arrazola.
The score remained scoreless heading into the final minutes of the period when Denver took advantage of a drive up the field. Playing the ball on the left side of the field, Natalie Beckman made a short cross into the center of the box. From 10 yards out, Samantha Feller picked up the ball and struck the right corner of the netting to give Denver the lead. Neither side came away with a shot attempt in the final moments as the Pioneers maintained their one-goal advantage.
SECOND HALF
Denver continued to attack the Matador goal out of the break with Hannah Adler missing wide of the net in the 55th minute. Moments later, Delgado made a diving stop to her left to stuff a shot from Meg Halvorson. On the flip side, the Matadors were unable to put a shot on frame in the period. Cindy Arteaga and Cora Willcot each missed wide while goalkeeper Brittany Wilson broke up potential scoring threats in the box.
CSUN nearly fell behind by two goals when Halvorson hit the left post in the 84th minute. The ball would bounce back in front of the box where Camryn MacMillan sent in a second shot but the Matador defense blocked away the attempt. Delgado made her final save of the afternoon in the 88th minute with a two-handed save off a shot from Esther Malers. The Matadors could not muster a last-second scoring chance as Denver controlled the clock in the final moments of the match.
GAME NOTES
The trio of Amanda Martin, Sydney Gilbert and Kacie Garrity played the full 90 minutes on Sunday. Gallardo saw the most minutes off the bench with 66 played.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH KEITH WEST
"I don't think we played our best game today. I have to take responsibility for this one. [With conference play next week], we're looking for consistency. I know we're young, we're playing a lot of freshmen and relying on a lot of young players, but we've been playing this game a long time."
UP NEXT
CSUN opens up Big West play next week on the road. The Matadors make the trek to Hawai'i for a Thursday night match at 10 p.m. (PDT) before visiting UC Riverside next Sunday (Oct. 6) at 7 p.m.
