FRESNO, Calif. - Behind freshmen Eirik Thomassen and Mats Ege, the CSUNÂ Men's Golf team is tied for fourth after two rounds of the Nick Watney Invitational Monday at Fort Washington Country Club.
The Matadors carded consecutive team rounds of 280 for a day one total of eight-under 560. CSUN is tied with San Diego and San Jose State, six shots behind co-leaders Long Beach State and BYU. The Matadors lead the 15-team field in pars with 125 over the first two rounds.
Thomassen fired seven birdies over the first two rounds, four coming in a first-round two-under 69. He then followed up with three more birdies in round two on his way to a one-under 70. Ege also had seven birdies on the day, three in round one's 69 and four in round two's 70. Both CSUN players are tied for 13th at three-under 139, seven strokes behind Long Beach State's Hunter Epson who leads at 10-under 132. Â
"Both Eirik and Mats are very experienced players," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "Even though they're both freshmen, they've played a lot of international tournaments and they know how to win and manage their game."
Another freshman, Brandon McDonough made his Matador debut Monday and is tied for 27th at even-par 142. McDonough finished round one at two-over before firing three birdies on his way to a second-round two-under 69.
Sophomore Paul-Louis Gachet made his 2019 season debut and finished with rounds of 72-71 and is tied for 32nd at one-over 143. Fellow sophomore Tomas Helgo is tied for 47th at three-over 145 following rounds of 70-75 and senior Michael Zhang is tied for 73rd at seven-over 149 following rounds of 73-76.
"This team has talent, we're just young," added Bracken. "Obviously we're very early in the season and we're building but I think we can put together another good round tomorrow. With this team, I think we should finish in the top half of every field."
The Matadors will be paired with the tournament leaders for Tuesday's final round which gets underway at 8:45 a.m. CSUN will tee off with Long Beach State, BYU and Fresno State.
