FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Eirik Thomassen posted his second top-20 finish in as many tournaments as the CSUN Men's Golf team finished in seventh-place Tuesday at the conclusion of Fresno State's Nick Watney Invitational at Fort Washington Country Club.
After rounds of 280-280 on Monday, the Matadors posted a team round of 290 on Tuesday but dropped three spots on the leaderboard to seventh.
"In terms of getting under par, we just couldn't get anything going today," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "As a coach, you always want your team in the final grouping in the last round and we accomplished that in this tournament. We were right there in the mix for much of the tournament so this is definitely something to build on going forward."
Thomassen, who was tied 13th after two rounds, had three birdies and a pair of bogeys Tuesday to slip into a tie for 19th at four-under 209. Thomassen posted his first collegiate top-20 finish after taking 12th at the season-opening Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational. The freshman from Rygge, Norway finished with 38 pars over three rounds, tied for fifth-most in the field.
Fellow freshman Mats Ege, who was tied with Thomassen through 36 holes, carded a one-over 71 on Tuesday to drop just outside of the top-20 (24th). Ege bogeyed his opening hole and then made par on the next 17 holes to finish the tournament with 42 pars, most of any player in the field.
Also for the Matadors, freshman Brandon McDonough capped his first CSUN tournament with a round of three-over 74 to tie for 41st at three-over 216. Sophomore Paul-Louis Gachet also carded a final-round three-over 74 to finish in a tie for 50th at four-over 217 and Tomas Helgo made it three CSUN players with a final round 74 to finish tied for 57th at six-over 219.
Senior Michael Zhang, competing as an individual, tied for 74th at nine-over 222 following a final round two-over 73.
CSUN is back in action Oct. 14-15 when the Matadors host the Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley.
