Second-Round 292 Drops CSUN to 10th at Gene Miranda Invitational
9/7/2019 5:57:00 PM | Men's Golf
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - After an opening-round 291, the CSUN Men's Golf team followed up with a second-round 292 but slipped four spots in the leaderboard Saturday at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational at the Eisenhower Golf Course.
The Matadors, who were sixth after round one, dropped one shot from round one to round two but were overtaken by three teams. First-round leader Air Force (564) remained atop the team leaderboard but had its lead trimmed to two shots over Colorado (566). CSUN (583) is currently 10th in the 18-team field.  Â
"We just couldn't get anything going today," said head coach Jim Bracken. "We played holes 11 through 15 horribly and that was costly in terms of us moving up. Hopefully, this will be the high round we shoot in this tournament. This is our first time playing this course and the greens are pretty severe, but we'll look for a better final round tomorrow and see if we can move up."
Freshman Eirik Thomassen posted his second consecutive round of one-under 71 and is tied for 14th at two-under 142. Thomassen, who equaled his first round total with four birdies on Saturday, heads into the final round just three shots out of the top-five in his first collegiate tournament.
Junior Blake Brothers was the lone CSUN player to make a positive move in the second round as he jumped nine spots from 43rd to 34th at two-over 146. In carding an even-par 72 on Saturday, Brothers had three birdies and 13 pars.
Freshman Mats Ege followed up an opening-round 73 with a second-round (+2) 74 and slipped into a tie for 44th at three-over 147. Senior Michael Zhang, who was tied with Ege after round one, posted a second-round (+3) 75 and dropped into a tie for 50th at four-over 148. Tomas Helgo rounded out the CSUN lineup as the sophomore is currently tied for 91st at 12-over 156 following consecutive rounds of 78.
CSUN will be paired with UTEP, Southern Utah and Weber State for Sunday's final round which gets underway at 7:30 a.m.
