9/8/2019 6:13:00 PM | Men's Golf
AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo - Led by freshman Eirik Thomassen's 12th-place finish, the CSUN Men's Golf team finished 11th at the season-opening Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational at Eisenhower Golf Club.
The Matadors closed with a team round of (+7) 295 to finish the tournament with a team total of 14-over 878. Colorado (854) stormed past Air Force which led for the first two rounds as the Buffaloes finished at 854, five strokes better than Northern Colorado (859). UC Davis (861) was third, Air Force (862) was fourth and Wyoming (863) took fifth in the 18-team field.
Thomassen, a freshman from Rygge, Norway, added four more birdies Sunday giving him 12 in three rounds. After consecutive rounds of 71, Thomassen closed with an even-par 72 on Sunday to finish the tournament at two-under 214.
"Eirik played great in his first tournament,"Â said head coach Jim Bracken."The course played hard the entire tournament. If seven-over is the highest we shoot all year we'll look back and be pretty happy with that. We've got plenty of time to get some qualifying in before the Fresno State Invitational."
Also for the Matadors, freshman Mats Ege finished tied for 37th in his CSUN debut at four-over 220 following rounds of 73-74-73. Junior Blake Brothers, also playing in his first tournament for the Matadors, tied for 49th at six-over 222. Brothers closed with a four-over round of 76 on Sunday. Senior Michael Zhang tied for 52nd at seven-over 223 (73-75-75) and sophomore Tomas Helgo finished tied for 83rd at 15-over 231 following rounds of 78-78-75.
Southern Utah's Jake Vincent, one of three players to tie at seven-under 209, claimed individual medalist honors on a two-hole playoff with pars on both No. 10 and No. 18.
CSUN will next be in action at the Fresno State Invitational which is scheduled for Sept, 30-Oct. 1 at Fort Washington Country Club.
